Cephalopods....Land bound?!

Ok, this is going to sound kind of crazy but I'm a little crazy with my ideas anyway so here it goes.

Has anyone ever tried to construct, or heard of anyone who has tried to make, an octopus helmet/suit which would allow an octopus to spend a considerable amount of time on land? As in allow your pet octopus to walk around your house?

I know, I know, I'm crazy but I though about it as I was walking on campus today looking at the ground. They would need an apparatus to breathe on land but would they also need to have water covering their limbs? Instead of a helmet, I was thinking of something a little lighter like a rip-proof plastic suit to fit around the head or maybe the entire body with some kind of mechanism to recirculate the water. Similar to space suits or scuba gear but for octos. I'm thinking of also posting this on tonmo for obvious reasons but just thinking what some of you guys think on this small ceph dedicated portion of RC.

Likely? Unlikely? Should I check myself into a mental asylum because this is too far out there?

First, it would DEFINITELY have to be a full suit. The body will dry out if exposed to air for too long. It would be possible if, and ONLY if, two things were to happen.

1 they would need to have a skeleton. This is important because otherwise there would be no way to construct a suit that they wouldn't squirm their arms out of.

2 they should really need to be sentient in order to get their cooperation. Otherwise, imagine trying to get that little bugger in all 8 arms!

What about something like a hamster ball that they could roll around? Dosnt require a skeleton to do, and no need to put each arm into an individual part and worry about them getting it out and being stuck.

I thought about the hamster ball too but I was thinking of something that would allow them to interact with "our world". You know like being able to hold things and what not. But it would be really cool to have one rolling around my place in a ball.

First, I would never support or encourage actually using a hamster ball. The container would have to be watertight and perfectly smooth on the inside to keep from putting the octo at risk. However, that said, octos are intelligent and curious by nature. If one was trained to enter the ball willingly (not tricked with food), sealed while in the tank, and carefully placed on a flat surface next to the tank (so they could see their home still) I would argue that it may not be abusive.

Argh, no abuse intended. I've had gerbils before, hamster ball isn't literal, a ball type sphere is the target with some kind of way to filter the water if inking/waste occurs. Chill no ones going bowling with it or anything.

Don't know now. I'm asking other peoples opinions at school on this and getting mixed answers :/ I don't know, so the ethical thing's still up in the air but first I need to see if it's even feasible. More work than I thought. I'll have to work on it myself whenever I decide to keep cephs again but I'll keep checking this out. Wonder if my tonmo account is still active....
