Chaeto in-sump lighting - Tunze eco-chic?

Hi all,

I have an unusually shaped rectangular section (60x25) in my sump which I'm dedicating to growing chaeto.

I was looking at grow-light style options with the blue and red LEDs. I'm not in the market for the Kessil variety because of the cost but there seem to be some high-watt Chinese options out there. I have read some mixed results with them though and reports of better success under 6500k lighting. Is this people's experience here?

With this in mind I was actually looking at 2 x Tunze eco-chic white - "Equipped with 30 white LEDs with 840 lm and a color temperature of approx. 6,500 K."

Two would cover my sump section perfectly and the magnetic mount option solves even more problems. Does anyone see an issue with this approach? Would it be enough of the right type of light to grow chaeto?

I recently tried a mars aqua 300w grow light (116watts in real world) 69.99 on Amazon and that thing grows chaeto likes weeds. 1 week double chaeto.

Check out the recent BRS videos on fuge lighting.

That's what got me thinking about the chinese made grow light option. Certainly can't justify the kessil option used in the video though. And as I mentioned, lots of reefers report better results with 6500k. :reading:

6500K florescent and 6,500K LED are two very different lighting spectrum. Green macro of any sort will do best under a LED light dominated by red and/or deep red (620-660 nm) as opposed to cool white led's that are primarily blue and green.

the LED full spectrum (8850.000) model would do better but I do not think the price / performance ratio is going to be there as opposed to other options.

I've bought a mars aqua 300w grow light and that thing grows chaeto likes mad. Doubled my chaeto in a week. It's actually only uses 100w

Ahhh ok. That helps me a lot. Thanks

Have you seen the Finnex planted+ LED? Very reasonable price, white and red LED available in various lengths. I had one in my planted tank and it grew plants very well.

Clamp on work light: $5
LED "Plant Bulb" on Amazon: $13

$18 all-in and you have something that is only beat by the $300 kessil grow light.
