Chalice frags: How do you know shape?

This may be a really basic question, but, I'm curious how you can tell from a frag if a chalice coral is going to grow up to be "saucer shaped," or more of an encrusting coral. Or, do they all eventually become "cup shaped" or "saucer shaped?" Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks.
 
They start to look like saucers usually because they were left to grow on the sandbed, but even at this they will eventually contort, fold and plate out leaflets. One that appears encrusting early is usually because it had a larger solid substrate that it was able to attach, which is there ultimate goal; to anchor down and establish residency :)
