I have a deep sand bed (playsand) in my 75 gallon tank. The tank has been set up for almost 2 years and is fully stocked.
My husband has decided to put down new tile in the dining room.. so we will be moving the tank.
I want to change the deep sand bed for a shallow sugar fine aragonite sand bed.
I figured I could change out a small section and replace it. wait a bit then do it again until finally the entire sandbed is changed over. Put the fisn in totes and move the tank replacing most of the original water that I drain out for the move.
Is this the way I should do it? Or should I set up a 55 gallon tank as a temp tank, drain the 75, remove the sandbed, move the tank, replace it and add the fish back in?
I'm trying to avoid a major ammonia spike and anything else that may crop up with removing the deep sand bed. Plus save as much of the beneficial bacteria as possible.
If I should change it out a little at a time. How much should I remove and how long should I wait before I move onto the next section?
any ideas or suggestions are welcome!
