Changing Salt Brands

I am considering changing the brand of salt I've been using and I don't want to suddenly make a drastic change in the tank. Any suggestions on how big of water changes would be appreciated.

I switched salt brands. All I did was continue my regular schedule of 5g/week in my 45g, just switched the salt I was using when the other ran out. I suppose if you wanted even less drastic change, you could do your water changes with 50/50 mix of old/new salt & then gradually work towards 100% new salt over the next few weeks. IME, it shouldn't affect the tank inhabitants much as long as all the normal parameters we test for match (temp, SG, pH, Alk, Ca).

That's pretty much what I had in mind, I usually change 15 gal a week on a 90 gal. Maybe just do 10 a week for awhile and gradually get back to the 15 gal. Thanks

I suppose if your really concerned, mix the salt and vary the ratios of old and new until you are to 100% new, for a gradual tranistion. Kinda like acclimating fish from the store......

If you post what salt you are using and what you what salt you want to go to on the Chemistry forum, I am sure they could tell you the EXACT difference in the salts and how to compensate and what to expect from the change.

I havent read a story of someones tank crashing by switching salts (good brand salts that is). Now if you switch to a brand that is known to have problems then you are going to have problems.

I prefer not to say what salts. I'm trying to avoid getting a debate started on the better of the 2 salts. I will say they are both name brands and highly used. I'm not so concerned about a tank crash as much as I am about stability. I went through the crash earlier this year but I'm sure changing salts several months before had nothing to do with it. Since starting back up, the few corals I have just don't seem to be doing as well as my previous corals did with the other salt.
