Changing Salt Mix

I had another thread which spawned this question. My Mag and Cal are very high and it was discussed that this might be due to using Reef Crystals without any LPS or SPS in the tank (only leathers and softies right now). So the idea was to change my salt mix to a standard saltwater mix as opposed to a coral mix.

I'm wondering if I can go with a different brand or will that throw everything out whack? Would it be better to go with the regular Instant Ocean mix since I'm using their reef mix now?

Thanks,

Russell

You can switch, but careful monitoring of CA, Alk and Mag is critical- salt mixes can have wide latitudes. I'd have no problem switching to Instant Ocean.

The last thread I was reading was about how reef crystals has too low mag!!! I don't know which is true. I am still very new. I use reef crystals in my newly set up tank that is only 2 months old, still only live rock and clean up crew, and I have to add calcium and mag to keep at desired levels

i've switched salt mixes a few times. i don't do anything special when i switch, aside from a few more frequent tests just to make sure things stay on track.

I think some of my issue might be that I have RealReef rock which adds Cal to the system. Not sure why the Mag is so high though. I'm also very new but have tested it repeatedly with the Red Sea test kits.
