Changing the Light Spectrum on an SPS/LPS tank

I would like some 2nd. (& 3rd.) opinions on this subject before I do anything. Thanks!!!! :)

My current SPS/LPS tank has been up and running for just over 2 years now, and from day one, it has been under 300 watts VHO (no, I am not planning to go to MH at this time). I use the 4 - 75 watt bulb system, but instead of the 3 Aquasun & 1 Super Actinic like URI suggests for their bulbs, I have been using 3 - Actinic White & 1 Super Actinic. The growth is good, and I like how "natural" the colors look to me.

I have been toying with the idea of switching out the 50/50 bulbs with the Aquasun (I currently replace one bulb every 2 months, so that each bulb is only in the system for eight months), so that 8 months from now, the system is under 3 Aquasun & 1 Super Actinic.

Has anyone done this? What would be the effects on the corals? What type of color change would there/could there be? etc., etc.?

Thanks for any input you can provide!! :)

Hi Jason,

I don't think you would have any ill effects from doing this. The Aquasun's will have just a little more of a yellow tinge to them compared to the 50/50 lamps. However, the lamp itself is still not "yellow" per se. You will get a little more intensity out of the AquaSun lamp, so better growth could be something to look for. As far as coloration goes, I do not know. Let me know if you decide to do this, and what happens if you do.
