Chartwell's 50 gallon CAD cube

This is probably the dumbest question ever, but I don't know how far up the bubbles should come in the protein skimmer. There is the main chamber, then the neck, then the collection cup which has another chamber inside of it. Do I set it so bubbles come all the way up to the top of the chamber in the cup, or just to the neck of the skimmer?

I've never used a skimmer but from all the pictures I see, they look like they come up to the edge of the tube inside the collection cup then kinda spill over into it.

not familiar with that particular skimmer, but with the ones I have used you generally want the water level to be just beneath the bottom of the neck of the collection cup...from there the bubbles will build and overflow removing the unwanted organics

Thanks for the Bubble Magus thread - lots of good information there. Still no foam from my skimmer, maybe it just needs to break in for a few days...

Congrats!!!!! I wish mine would come together as fast as yours. How did you plumb your returns?Did you use bulkheads in the overflow wall?Do you have a Top down pic of your overflow.I'm following along on this one.Good Luck!:bounce1:

FISHUNT-72- Ha! It doesn't FEEL fast! :fun5: Anyway, the return does have the bulkheads and grey elbows and I have the Loc-line but I still need the Loc-line adapters- it was the only thing my LFS didn't have. We gave up on ever getting the "included" plumbing sent to us and just went and bought everything locally. So now I just need the adapters that go from the Loc-line to the bulkheads in the overflow wall and I'll be set. Here is the overflow plumbing:

The stuff at the front is half of a CD jewel case plus a little filter padding to muffle the noise. Without it the overflow was pretty amazingly loud, but that little trick makes it silent. I don't even remember where I saw that modification but I'm glad I remembered it!

The person who made up that mod said he changed it/rinsed it a lot - like every week or more. If I can get the CD case angled/attached just right I might be able to lose the filter, which would be nice. But it will be worth it even if I have to clean it constantly- otherwise it sounded like Niagara Falls in the room!

How did you split the return?Did you use a barbed T or Y?I'm going to run a Durso also, but if noise is an issue I'll try the Herbie Method. The only thing then is my returns will have to come over the back.

Kinda concerning that the overflow in its stock form is so loud, I suppose using both holes for a herbie setup might be an option. Anyone know if the back and or bottom of these tanks is tempered or not? I would kind of hate to have the return going up over the edge of the tank if I can help it.

I sort of assumed that but they could technically temper after the drilling, no? And only the bottom is drilled from the factory correct?

Well, I've never had a tank with an overflow before... maybe it is normal for it to sound like it did, but it seemed loud to us. In the Cadlights 39 Pro thread people were saying it was loud and that tank has the exact same overflow, so IDK, maybe it is loud!

FISHUNT72- the tank came with a piece of PVC for the return that was split into two parts with a kind of elbow, then we added a barbed piece to each of those ends, then a piece of vinyl tubing, then a grey elbow, then a bulkhead, then the Loc-line. Kind of a mess, but it works! We were going to use hard PVC but it was such a tight fit in the overflow that we gave up on that idea! I think a simply Y with vinyl tubing would be a very good option.

I put some little pieces of liverock in the sump today along with my ball of cheato that was just stuffed behind the rocks of my current tank.

We also set up the world's simplest ATO. Not much to look at but we tested it out and it works great. We used a 2.5 gallon water jug, an Aqualifter pump and two float switches. That pump is kind of slow, but very safe, as is the smallish reservoir.
