chasekwe's 33g Nano Tower

Well, finally, after quite a while with the Reefcentral.com website and these magnificent forums I get to make my own build thread. I've decided to go all out on this build to try and learn as much as I can and make for an interesting project that will last me for quite some time.

Later this year I'll be moving to a new home. When I get there I plan to start a large full on reef display so this nano set-up had to be something that was different than normal (not just a smaller reef) so it will still hold my attention after I have the larger display.

With this in mind I present to you what I call my "Nano Tower"! :D

chasekwe's Nano Tower

The Basics

Measurements
Display ------- 16"x16"x30" (33 Gallons) Quite "tower-y" for this size tank I think. :lmao:
Sump Tank --- 30"x20"16" (42 Gallons)
Stand -------- Sits the tank at 42"
Total Height -- 78.5"

Objective
The goal of this tank is to house to mutiple E. quadricolor with clowns and a single Stomatopod (Mantis Shrimp).

Approx. 2.5" of mixed-size substrate will be utilized along with 40+lbs of rock. Rock will be arranged in a pillar format up the center/rear-center of the tank, a relatively flat, thin, platform spawning from the pillar will be put in place at approx. 10" from the bottom. This will serve to block most of the lighting from reaching the lower end of the tank and provide a symbolic seperation between the anemone(upper) and mantis shrimp(lower) portions of the tank.

Relatively quiet, viewable from 3 sides with minimal equipment visible.

The Display
Starphire on viewable sides. Dimensions as above with black back and silicone. External overflow drilled for 4x 3/4" bulkheads for the BeanAnimal overflow system and 1 return, centered on back of tank. The tempered glass is custom made with holes already in place so I could use thinner materials for a couple reasons.

For those who are curious...
I received quotes from the following manufacturers during the planning stages: (PM me if you'd like a price comparison/my vendor impressions)
Acrylic and Glass Exhibits - Was not accepting new orders.

Coast to Coast
Envision Acrylic
Midwest Customs
Miracles Aquariums
Ocea Aquariums

The Sump
Rimless Acrylic, a variation of one of Melev's Model F designs in that water will drain into 2 separate chambers, refugium and skimmer compartment, before flowing to the return compartment and back to the display. Approximately 250-300GPH (6-7x) will flow through the sump in total with the majority flowing to the skimmer compartment.

picture.php

The refugium encompasses more than half of the total sump volume and will hold approx. 22 gallons when in operation. It will hold LR and Macro, be lit and receive additional flow from a cheapy powerhead.

Plumbing
This will be my first ever plumbed tank, so I'm trying to K.I.S.S. as much as possible while still managing the BeanAnimal system. Aside from the standpipes I'll likely use 3/4" Flex PVC throughout. Approx. head for return flow is 6-7ft. There will be no additional plumbing.

Equipment - The Big Ones

Return - Eheim 1260

Flow - Ecotech Marine Vortech MP10 x2

Skimmer - Bubble King Mini 160 Gen 2

Light - LED Pendant (Considered Aqua Illumination but am having second thoughts)

The tank will not have corals so no dosing equipment is being incorporated, all other basic essentials will be present such as controlled heating, ATO and RODI units, etc.

The Stand/Hood
Aside from the RODI and mixing tanks which will be kept under a bathroom sink all equipment will be maintained within the stand or hood. There isn't much else to say, I went through easily 10 iterations before finalizing the design and will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Stand/Hood are constructed largely from 3/4" ply, the finish in the colored images is not representative of a final decision. I haven't decided what finish I'll use yet, I may even go with a black laminate of some sort.

Now here is the kicker..., and what I'm most excited and most nervous about at the same time. Along with doing the plumbing I'm building the display, ATO reservoir tank, sump, stand and hood myself! For reference, the last thing I built was a wooden box in shop class back in grade school. Is this stupid? Probably, but it's my time and money so leave me be, LOL! :crazy1: I do have some experienced people in the area to reference and I've been doing research here for years.

Oh and cause I think it's kinda cool... The materials for all 3 tanks, the plumbing parts and all the wood for the stand and hood cost me almost exactly what the lowest quote I received to have just the display custom built with shipping.

Anyways ladies and gents, that's the whole shebang... glass is on order and being cut as you read this, I hope the thread turns out as interesting as this build should be... there'll be real pictures as soon as there's something real to take a picture of. In the meantime, here's a couple extra fake ones.

wow good luck with it! it looks like it would turn out fricken awesome! I will def. be watching this thread to see how it comes out! :) I'm guessing the starphire glass is stronger than regular? I have heard of mantis shrimps breaking regular glass o_o

Very cool idea, and it definitely looks like you've done a lot of research. My only question is this; aren't you worried about the mantis eating your clowns, or at least any CUC you add? Best of luck! :)

Mantis have reportedly broken glass, but not 1/2" glass. That's for the super thin glass used on some smaller/shallower tanks. Starphire glass is actually more prone to scratches, which I would assume means it is also generally weaker. However, the mantis breaking a 1/2" glass pane just isn't gonna happen.

Thanks.

I'm not worried about the mantis with the clowns. It is possible there will be an issue but as I said, that's my goal, it may not work but I feel a lot of other people take far larger risks than this.

Yes, it will eat my CUC, that's just gonna be part of my upkeep expenses. I will, however, be experimenting with a more diverse CUC than average in hopes of finding creatures with more mantis survivability.

Yay, time for my first real update!

I just received some of my glass today, the tempered pieces. AKA anything with a hole in it + the bottom of the tank. Also, anything colored red on my diagram at the beginning of this post.

I also picked up all of the plumbing parts I need minus the bulkheads. All of it will be painted black so I didn't much care about color matching, etc.

Without further ado:

Note that I haven't cleaned it up yet but the edges are cloudy as opposed to polished. The bottom piece is 1/2" the other 2 panes with the holes in them are 3/8". Keep in mind for those of you contemplating drilling your own holes mine do not meet safety standards generally set for normal glass. These holes were drilled and the glass was later tempered allowing me to use 3/8" glass on a 30" tank so that I could utilize my vortech MP10s for flow. For normal glass 3/8" would be to thin and the holes would be drilled to close to the edge for safety.

As to my plumbing, not as exciting but here you go... it's all 3/4" and 1 1/4"

I used multiple reduction fittings in order to ease the change in pipe diameter size as I plan to use BeanAnimal's overflow and want to maintain less turbulence in the piping.

is there any way to make your pics tile vertical instead of horizontal?

btw looking good, and good luck!

They do tile vertical for me, are they horizontal to everyone else? I'm using Chrome if that matters.

Ok ya I just tried looking at the thread in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla... Internet Explorer does tile out the pictures horizontally. I can't go back and edit those posts now but in the future I'll post pictures so this doesn't happen.

Very cool. I like that a person doesn't have to squat to look into the tank.

Yes, thank you, my livelihood relies on my back being in good condition... so I don't mess around when it comes to something I'll spend so many hours in front of.

Update time! I just got back from my approx. 4 hour round trip to White Plains NY to pick up my glass from Glasscages. The truck was a white box truck with GlassCages written on the side but I didn't get any pictures of that process because it was just me and things went pretty quick.

In this shipment I picked up the remainder of the glass for my display, including the 3 Starphire panes and all the glass for the eurobracing and external overflow. I also had glass cut for a custom size ATO reservoir and all of the acrylic for my ~42 gallon sump.

For now I didn't have the room setup to completely spread out but when I get to actually building I'll get a side-by-side comparison of 1/2" Starphire, Regular, Regular Tempered Glass and Acrylic materials for clarity. Just for my own curiosity I held a piece of 3/8" regular glass next to one of the 1/2" Starphire panels and the difference was obvious.

Packaging was not nearly as nice as Onedayglass.com where I got my custom tempered panels but considering the price difference I'm pleased enough... nothing came the worse for wear.

Below are the boxes for the small ATO tank and the various pieces for the external overflow.

These 2 boxes contained the 3 starphire panels.
picture.php

This is the acrylic package, all acrylic panels were packaged together, considering how much material was there I found it funny that this package didn't weigh as much as the one box containing the 2 side glass panels of the display.
picture.php

...and, of course, the silicone... 2 black tubes, 1 clear.
picture.php

...more to come... :spin1:

First I unboxed the acrylic as this was the least scary to deal with!

The 1/4" pieces in blue are the baffles, the smaller pieces are 10x10" and I can't recall exactly how long the larger is offhand.
picture.php

This is the best side-shot I could manage of the 1/4" black acrylic which will be used between the refugium and the rest of the sump to block light and deter growth in the skimmer and return chambers.
picture.php

The bottom and outside walls are all 1/2" which was the width recommended to allow the sump to be rimless, here is the side-shot.

Here's all the pieces together...

I figured I'd clamp the pieces together real quick to give an idea of how it'll look later along.

Next I unpackaged the Starphire panels. These make up the front and both sides of the display tank.

I should note that every single piece of glass Glasscages sent me had at least a small imperfection in the cut of the panel. Usually one corner is slightly out of skew but on some panels there are small 1/8" diameter chips near the edges, etc. In only one instance was the imperfection so bad that it would be problematic to the integrity of the tank... or for that matter, even visible after the tank is put together. Very fortunately for me the one major imperfection is on the short side of the largest Starphire panel which means I can orient it to the top of the tank and the edge won't even come into contact with any other seams.

Side-shot front Starphire panel.

Another angle...

Here is the imperfection, circled red, I mentioned. :thumbdown

The 2 side panels, when I first opened the packaging and realized they hadn't put any foam between the 2 pieces I nearly had a heart attack... but they're both fine and show no scratches as a result!
picture.php

Here they are, is it wrong that I'd like to "motor-boat" that sweet set?! :inlove:
picture.php

Lastly, some random shots of the smaller and less exciting pieces...

Here is the glass for the ATO tank, the 2 very small pieces are part of the support for the external overflow on the main display.

Nice DIY thread you have going......Opening all those packages is like x-mas for a reef addict..........When you ordered the acrylic did you specify to have the edges routed/seamed. I don't see any saw tooth marks which leads me to believe either they were cut on a CNC router or had some type of post trimming after it came off the saw. Thanks.
