Cheap Acans and Acan Lords? Strange

I bought an 6" mottled Acanthastrea back in 2003 when I thought I was getting a sick Favites for $40. Orange Cycloseris were over $100 when they first appeared, now they are $20. Orange plating Montipora was $50 for a fingernail fragment, now you can't give it away. The popularity of fashionable coral last about 6 months, unless its a tank-propogated fragment that is both rare and slow to grow, or unless the coral is trully rare in the wild. Most Acans are a fairly common coral. The ones you are linking don't have apparent flourescense, which will further devalue them.

Supply and Demand

agreed. they are great LPS corals, quick growing, hardy, etc.

But not they are not the 'flavor of the year'

To anybody that wants to pick them up though they are indeed very beautiful/fast growing corals, just don't pay too much for them.

Just my newb opinion.

Who cares what's in?

Do I date a blonde because they're in, or because I like them?

Yes, they are a lot cheaper. Got mine [green w/ red] in the fall from the LFS for around $60 ... about the standard LPS price.

You can buy blondes at your LFS....Cool. Where at??

Dang... my LFS sucks compared to Marks :D

Japanese acan lords are illegal to import, but not own (which is good since they are MUCH cooler, with colors the standard lords can't touch). They aren't uncommon in the wild, it's just that Japan has unbelievably strict laws on this stuff, so they are rarely seen in the US. They command about $50-100 a polyp, and IMO, are worth every penny, as one polyp ends up at the size of a golfball in about a year or less.

Indonesian acan lords are the ones usually seen, and at one point were just as expensive to purchase, although this was much more of a trendy aspect as opposed to the true supply and demand with Japanese lords. They are still nice, although once you see a Japanese lord, good luck on being satisfied with an Indonesian.

Was that blonde dyed or was that the natural color? You have to watch out, some places dye their blondes in order to sell more. :)

I usually go to Japan once a year. Would it be illegal to buy it there and then bring it back to the US? I suppose that would still be considered "importing".....

Oh, I'm referring to japanese acans, not blondes....

I think that would probably be illegal, but you can find out for sure by checking with the people at the embassy.

I didn't want to buy the "in" corals (i have NO lighting) I was just curious, for clarification. :D

I'd have to say chalices and montipora danaes are considered the "cool" things to have right now. I personally agree that they're awesome and don't mind spending a little extra to get them.

It would be carrying an controlled/endangered species [subject to CITES] across national borders ... at best you'd have to register it + get all the paperwork.

I wouldn't, it's not worth violating international treaties, getting in trouble with US F&W + customs. Given regulation on import + the hobby has increased in the last decades - IMO we want to pay attention to these things to keep the import/`harvest' levels at where they're at. Not give reason to clamp down on the SW hobby even more, as has been proposed.

Pretty corals, but if I knew it was a Japanese Acan - I'd turn it down.
