Cheap Metal Halides

I wouldn't try it. Although it may be drawing 175 watts of electricity, there is no mention of the color spectrum emitted by these lights. If they are too blue, you won't get the rich colors from your coral. They may be fine for the sump, but I wouldn't put them over my coral.

you can try... but why would you.. lighting is what shows off everything you have worked so hard to keep up.. you tank will only look cheap with cheap lighting...

Most of those MH work lights are 5500K so the problem isn't too much blue, it's too much yellow. It'll look like someone peed in your tank. That's waaaaaay worse than blue. Apart from that, they usually aren't properly cooled, insulated and shielded for use over a tank.

You can use that fixture, but the problem is you would have to replace that bulb. And since its a medium based socket it would be hard to find a bulb. You would have to replace the socket. If you are handy, it might be worth a shot.

While this is probably true, once you replace those items you are within easy reach of a regular proper MH fixture made for tanks.

I live close to the ocean, and unless it says "marine use" it will corrode like crazy. You'll be lucky to get it apart within a year.

I suspect that above a tank would have the same effect.
