There are a lot of different factors. One is name brand. Sticking a fancy name on the front may or may not increase the quality of the unit, but it almost always increases the price. Where it is made also with be a factor. If it is made in a low cost region, they can pass the savings on to the customer. Finally the quality of the components plays a big part. Ballast, reflector, and of course bulb quality will play a big part as well. I would research the model you are looking at and see what you find. It is not a bad idea to let someone else be the tester before you buy.
I currently bought some 250 watt MH HQI bulbs on Ebay. I am quite happy with them. Bought them from Proaquarium. I tried all the others and all I got was bulbs that seemed 10-12 k at best. They have been in place for @ 2 weeks now and the color is improving on all my corals.
