is there a cheap alterantive to buying sand from a lfs? i have a 125 that im upgrading to a 180 and i plan to buy regular sand and seed it with my exsisting live sand..... ive heard lots about cheap sands that can be used in a aquarium.... my question is whats the cheapest/safest sand to get without getting rammed by the fish stores? i dont want to have algea problems and unwanted nutriants so what should i do?

The easiest one that I found was just to search through a local Petco...the one closest to my house has dry sand for 14.99 per 20-pound bag-that's .75 per pound. Wash it a few times with RO-water, then put it in the 180 and seed it with your existing sand from the 125. I know what you mean about LFS problems-the LFS closest to me has some absolutely ridiculous prices on live rock/sand.

Considering the expense of setting up and maintaining a reef tank, don't skimp on the sand;)

Dang, that is a pretty steep price! I would say their markup is a little much:lol: I would shop around, or buy from Doctor Foster and Smith since they have cheap shipping.

is the "marco rocks" sand any good? right now its $99 for 160lbs of crushed aroginite

i thought that marco rock was running a special on aragonite for the month of august. it was a good deal and included shipping. i was considering ordering a ton for a future big tank im dreaming of.

when doing my tank, i found the cheapest way to get good
sand (e got mostly pink fiji) was through
http://tropiquarium.petrg.com/

although you have to experiment to get the best shipping
price (if i recall correctly, shipping for an order of 80lbs
was much cheaper than half the shipping for 160lbs).
