Just be leary of the offers. Most only save you on the GENERATION COST, not the other costs (distribution, maintenance or taxes). Most of the alternatives only lock the savings in for 6 months to a year and actually end up costing you more in both the short run and much more in the long run.

A rough example:

Here in PA we Duquense Light owns the disitribution equipment.

Dominion just sent us a letter offering 10% savings until may 2008 (when the rates can then be jacked up).

Generation .0725 per kWh
Distribution .0775 per kWh
25$ in taxes and fees

So take 1000 kWh on a bill
$175 for the total bill

Now look at the offer from the 3rd party
Generation .0725 per kWh - 10% = .06525
Distribution .0775 per kWh
$167.75 for the total bill (10% savings on generation)
Add in administrative fees of ~$5.00 for the Dominion processing
and the bill is $172.75

A whopping $2 savings on a $175 electric bill. Come may of 2008 the savings will almost certainly turn into a 5$-10$ loss per month. The same holds true for natural gas and long distance. In almost ALL cases the cheapest vendor is the one who owns the infrastructure.

I am not saying you can't save money... I am just saying you need to be very careful before you make the switch.

The CT public utility commision will be glad to tell you who offers services in your area.

I don't think there is much we can do about the cost of electricity. However, I do think a lot can be done about how much electricity our equipment uses. What we need are more efficient pumps, heaters and lighting options.

Just run a cord one house down:lol:

With this meter, you pay mucho less denero during the off peak hours, which is where I get the $0.019/KWH. This is when I run my lights, washer, dryer, dishes, cool my house in the summer, etc. BUT during the on peak hours you pay more than the normal KWH that everyone pays normally. You run most of your appliances at night and not during the day you save so much more. Last bill was for $84 for 1586 KWHs. You have to call your electric company and ask for it by name. They won't offer/suggest it out of the blue.

Wow, thanks for the info. I'll have to do a little more research and make sure this is right for us, but my wife and I are never home during peak hours anyway.

If the first person you talk to when you call the power company doesn't know what you're talking about when you ask about it, call back a few more times if you have to until you find someone that does. That's what I had to do before they knew what I was talking about. Some know about it and some don't. You might have to talk to one of the service reps that go out in the field and actually installs the meters.

shoot my peak is .069 kwh and off peak is .05 kwh..that with time of use metering..without time of use metereing is still .057 kwh
