Cheapest dry aragonite sand online

Need to pick up about 100 - 125 lbs of dry aragonite sand for my new setup, I really have no preference to the so called "live" sand in a bag or dry aragonite, I just need it to be cheap!

Cheapest I have found on my own was about $100 for 100 lbs.

Looking if it is possible to get it for less than $1/lb

Anyone have any links?

Thanks a lot.

$100 for 100lbs is about as cheap as it gets, I think. Another thing to consider--shipping. Some e-tailers kill you on shipping heavy items. I find that www.thatfishplace.com does not kill you on heavy items, which is why I always order from them. For example, a bucket of Instant Ocean salt from marine depot is $35 plus $26 in shipping (FedEx ground). That same bucket of salt from TFP is $29 plus $17 for shipping (FedEx ground).

Anyway, here's a link to good, cheap substrate --100 lbs will run you $94 plus $20 shipping (assuming it's shipped to florida): http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/233942/product.web

Thanks for the links, I would really like to avoid spending over $100 on just sand, has anyone been able to find some for about $0.50 or $0.75 a pound?

you could try play sand, southdown, or even pulverized limestone. there are many alternatives to aragonite, you just need to know where to look :). take a trip down to your local hardware store and see what you can find. HTH

I think I just picked up a 30lb. bag of CaribSea Aragonite sugar size oolite sand from PetSmart about 2 weeks ago for just a shade over $20. That would get you 90lbs for like $65-$70. They had more choices in the store than they do on their website, too. if you have one nearby I suggest checking it out. They have some 15lb bags of stuff that cost a good bit more per pound though, so just make sure you're dealing with the 30lb bags for that price.

There's your winner.:eek2:

Haha. Have to give credit to my wife for finding that one, but I think when she found it they weren't offering the 15% off.

I'll take the credit: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1418992 :D

That is definately your best bet right now, but I will warn you that I purchased this "sand" (CaribSea Aragonite Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand) and was not really happy with it. I was thinking it was more of a sugar-sized grain, but it was almost a crushed coral size. I ended up bringing them into my local Petsmart after they arrived and exchanged it for the sugar-sized sand that they had in the store (the sugar size wasn't available online).

I didn't realize it was that grade. My local petsmart only sells the sugar size in 30lb bags for $35, so I don't think they would be so happy to even exchange it for me. Hmm, now I'm not sure what to do for substrate. ( not an attempt to hi-jack thread)

They didn't do an even exchange, I had to bring in the receipt, so it ended up not being such a great deal (because I didn't get the 15% off). That's okay.

I bought (2) 40lb bags online for about $23 each (after 15% discount), shipping was free

I went into the store and found the 30lb bags of sugar-sized sand for $20 each, so I bought 3 of them.

After getting $46 back from the return of my online purchase (had to have the receipt to prove the price), I paid an extra $15 but ended up with 90 lbs instead of 80 lbs.

LJA, just noticed you're in Florida... I would imagine there are a LOT of local fish stores that sell sand in bulk. The only reason I bought my sand online was that no stored sold the sand I wanted locally. As it turns out, Petsmart did, so I bought it from them.

Worst case scenario, if your LFS doesn't have sand, maybe you could try Petsmart? I would think there is a Petsmart somewhere near you.

if you have a petsmart nearbuy they will honar their web prices just print it off their website and take it to the store. that way you dont have to wait for shipping

My local petsmart didn't carry the "Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand" that I bought online... and the online store didn't have the "sugar-sized" sand that they had in-store.

Now if only the store would accept the 15% off coupon that is available online... :(

I'm looking for the same thing and just came across this company, Calcean's website: http://www.calcean.com/page-p/

They sell the dried oolitic sand for aquarium substrates. I'm going to contact them and get pricing on 100 lbs bag.
