Cheato help!

Nothing is ever simple or easy in this hobby. I'm hoping to find the natural balance instead of hitting it with more chemicals.
Hint then (and I liked your reasons).. Cut your light hours down by two hours, and give it a week or two.. You should read nitrate again.. Probably only like 0.25,but a reading ..then ,your phosphorus will begin to fall again.. But it will take a little bit of time..

Does anyone know if macro algae releases nutrients back into the water column when the lights on it are off? I thought I read that somewhere.

from my understanding: by have a on/off light cycle that is when the plants go sexual. Leaving them on for 24 hours keeps them from going sexual and just growing.

Chaeto does need a "rest cycle". More than 18 hours of lighting becomes detrimental. Magnesium levels over 1500 PPM will put chaeto into a form of stasis,(meaning no growth and photosynthesis, which will end up killing it). It does not go sexual like calerpa.

Well I have completely turned off my GFO now as the chaeto is keeping it at 0 phosphates. One interesting point (which makes sense) after harvesting chaeto my PH dropped as it didn't have the big mass sucking up co2

It's insane how much of a difference in growth that 2nd light turned back on has made. I would say that in 3 or 4 days I should have another bucket to pull out.

What are your water parameters now?

The results are clear. I have a fuge full of cheato again and it's time to trim it. (I'll contact you guys one at at time for those who have requested cheato) The P04 went from 0.08 to 0.04 and the N03 is steady at 0.0. I'll remove more biopellets today to raise the N03 hopefully just a bit and drop the P04 more.
