can I use any type of macro algae in my main tank? I've heard no to calerpa, but what about chaeto (sp)?

usually what hapens is if you have something that eats it it will eat it until it's gone. if you have no macro eaters it will eventually become a nuicance. I would not put macro in the display

Cheetos in your tank will make the water turn orange

Most herbivores don't go after chaeto. It is fine to grow it in the tank for nutrient export.

Go down to the Special Interest Forums and you will see a seagrass forum which is for people with macroalgae tanks.
