chemiclean help...mild red color to the water...

Hi, i have 150 gallon with 60 sump mixed reef. battling red slime for a while so I decided to treat it with chemiclean and now getting a ro/di unit. was only using ro water before.

so i put it in yesterday around noon. shut off uv, media reactors, kept skimmer on and just let it overflow. also placed an airstone.

i had alot lets just say. this morning i see the water a bit of a red color to it. is that just the red slime dying off and in the water column?

going to do a big water change tomorrow night...roughly 48 hours after i started.

all this sound about right especially the red color in the water?

I am actually doing a round of chemiclean now, and have in the past, but haven't noticed any red color in my water. My guess would be that's just the cyano dying off though. As long as everything else in your tank is looking good and not reacting badly I wouldn't worry too much. Just proceed with your planned water change, and add some GAC. Last time I did chemiclean, even with large water changes, the skimmer still went nuts, until I ran GAC for a couple for a couple of days the skimmer did nothing but aerate the water.

Sounds good. I'll start the GAC and GFO after I do the water change tomorrow. I hope it's just cyano dying off....everything else seems to be doing good. Yeah my skimmer is going nuts but hopefully in a few days starts to calm down. But the aeration is awesome. Now to figure out an RO/DI unit. Thanks for the advice!

How did the ChemiClean work. Thinking of it as a last resort to the cyano I have in my tank if my 3 days lights out doesn't help push it back to where I need it.

It's worked just fine for me the 2 times I've used it. No ill effects to any of my coral, soft or stony or any of my fish/inverts. The Cyano seems to be around 95-98% better both times I've used it. There seems to be one little red spot that woun't go away, but it may actually not be cyano, as it seems a bit tougher to remove from the rock. No amount of blowing on it will make it budge.

I'd recommend it to anyone as soon as you see Cyano starting. I have waited too long both times and it starts to grow over my favorite birdsnest and suffocates it out of light, killing patches of the flesh.

Going good. my water cleared up and is no longer red..lol...just a but hazy due to all the air bubbles coming from the skimmer. Doing a 20% water change and starting the carbon up again. So lets see how things look tomorrow. everything still alive except the red slime of course. i still see a bit on my rocks so i'll blow that off...it looks dead for the most part. my ro/di unit is on the way. how's your's going?

Mine is going good. Just did a 15% WC last night and added new carbon back to my filter. Skimmer still going crazy, as expected. Last time even with carbon, it took close to a week if I remember right for it to get back close to normal. Cyano seems pretty much all gone. have a tiny bit of GHA starting where the cyano was, but heading in the right direction.

Nice! glad it's coming along for you as well. i feel like most has died but it's remnants are still attached to a few of the rocks and a little on the sand. but way better than what i started out with. my skimmer still going crazy as well. one thing i forgot was to change out the carbon. i just put in new about 10 days ago so hopefully it will be fine. might do it this weekend.
