Chemiclean in SPS tanks

Day 11 Update:

I'm starting to see serious progress in my corals. I do want to emphasize that this could be attribute mostly to removing GFO from my system after stripping my phosphates. However, my phosphates were stripped due to cyano. Since chemiclean removed the cyano, I guess the progress is indirectly a result of using chemiclean.

I'm seeing daily growth in my monti cap, which had been stagnant for quite some time. My Tricolor nana is recovering very nicely. About 60% of the tissue was lost due to GFO and it is making daily progress in recoving. Polyp extension is looking better by the day.

My LPS corals are even recovering better than SPS. My Tyree Baby Breath Favia is looking healthy and plump, which had been looking stressed for months. Even Candy Canes are plumped like they have been in the past. The tissue on my Chalice is thick and rich with color. Same with the xmas Favia.

I want to add that I am not new at reefing. I have been known to grow really nice corals in the past in previous systems. For some reason, when I got back in the hobby things just have not been going good. The only thing I have been doing different is running GFO in an attempt to control cyano. I used to be stern on the fact that not running GFO was what cause my corals to look as healthy as they did. I am confident in saying that running excessive GFO to control cyano is much harder on your corals than running chemiclean.

I used ChemiClean per instructions on this 465 gallon SPS tank about 3-4 weeks ago, and as usual, for me, it came through perfectly intact with great color. I don't wait until it becomes a plague. I usually have to treat this tank once a year.

I use GFO and have used GFO continuously in this tank since startup, except for the 48 hours of the ChemiClean treatment.

That is a very nice system you have. There is no question that there are a lot of systems that look great with nice corals that run GFO. Maybe my corals are responding more to chemiclean than to removing GFO. I do know that it is better to run chemiclean to get rid of cyano than running excessive GFO. Thank you for the advice and confidence to use chemiclean.

I want to add that using chemiclean was a last resort option for me. I do 30% water changes bi weekly, skim well, and don't overfeed.

Nice Tank!

Does chemi clean treat the green cyano as well? I have an sps tank and everything beyond seriatoporas looks great and is growing well but I just constantly deal with patches of this green cyano and it forms on the tips of my seriatoporas as well.

As far as I know, ChemiClean is for red cyano only, but if green is similar to red, then it might kill it as well. Interesting how one reefer has one pest and one has another. I have never had to deal with green cyano.

Today I have noticed that my clownfish laid eggs for the first time ever. I have had this pair of clown fish for over 5 years that this is the first time that I have ever spotted eggs. I know that there is no way to tell if chemiclean assisted with this but I always look at the chances. What are the chances that in 5 years the clowns have never laid eggs and just over 2 weeks after dosing I have spotted clown eggs? This may not be related to SPS corals but since the topic involved chemiclean, I wanted to point this discovery out.

Chemiclean

Chemiclean

Does chemiclean cause elevated phosphate levels? What happens if you leave your GFO on when you dose chemiclean?

I have a question regarding chemi-clean and the protein skimmer. Can I keep my skimmer on, "open" with the collection cup off for added oxygen in the tank? (I don't care if it overflows). I've seen some chemi clean crashes and it seems that nearly all of them are from oxygen depletion. Or, should I just pickup a couple airstones?

I used CC on my old 90g about 6 months ago. Tank was full of healthy SPS and there were 0 issues. It did seem to kill a lot of sponges though.

I followed directions as close as possible, left skimmer running wide open without cup and had air pump line run into the tank from outside.
