cherry anthias

I've only ever seen them in a public aquarium. I remember the Shedd in Chicago had a decent sized group of them about 3 years ago. I don't know of a good source for them either, I've never seen them available from any of the major wholesalers. You'll have a much better time keeping a temperate tank cool up in Oregon than we do here in the desert- good luck if you're able to try some!

huh... i can't believe that there aren't more ornamental fish collectors in japan, especially these days. there is some really nice stuff to be found there...

As I mentioned in the article, Sakura have been showing up through regular aquarium stores, but they are pricey. Also, I've only seen juveniles for sale, not the terminal adult males. The Aquarium of the Pacific kept them at normal tropical temperatures with apparently no problem, but I prefer to hold them around 68 degrees F.

Also as I mention, the problem with bringing fish in from Japan is that you aren't paying some third-world collector for cheap fish - this is a first world country and you have to pay more. That, plus the shipping ends up being very costly. Roughly, Sakura go for $28 to $36 USD FOB Tokyo. Figure on multiplying that by 3 to get your landed cost. Add your margin, and you're talking about a fish that wholesales for probably around $150

An importer just brought some temperate Japanese animals in two weeks ago - no Sakura though.....

Jay, can you comment on what fish were brought in? :) I have a temperate water reef (not quite 68, but 71-72 degrees), and am working on a stocking plan!

Feel free to PM too, if you'd like.

skibum,

It looked to me that most of the fish were things like Dochi sharks, small blennies, scorpionfish and gobies + 1 modestus butterflyfish, a smaller order. In the past, some of these fish showed up on LA's DD.... I don't know where these fish eventually went to.
