If you've got a huge tank , it doesn't matter so much - but in a 55g, I'd make sure I found juveniles. Juveniles can be identified by being about 1 inch or less from tip of nose to end of tail and being irresistibly cute ;) As long as the other fish are juveniles, one fish can be an adult and it will assume the male role :D

Are you saying they start out as females or are neither male nor female in the beginning?
 
For the record they are protogynous hermaphrodites, changing female to male. They start out female first.
