chevron tang good so far

hello, i bought a chevron tang almost a month ago...about 1 1/4". so far, so good. 300 gl. tank that I got going at the beginning of april. my concern is not much algea to eat. it feeds well on mysis, brine shrimp (selco added), & pellets. i also have yellow & hippo tang... all get along well. the other tangs eat dried seaweed (green) well & often! but the chevron doesn't eat much of it at all...just the small pieces that float by. is there another dried algea food or suppliment i could try. anyone else have one & what are you doing?
very pricey...$250 from blue zoo want to get this algea diet fixed before a problem starts.

some of my tangs enjoyed red and purple algaes over the green, you may try some of those to see if it whets the chevron's appetite.

Mine loves mysis, nutramar ova, some pellets.

they will eat a variety of foods and mine always eats PE mysis and then picks at the rocks for an occasional snack if needed .

thanks for responding. I'm a little nervous with this fish because before I bought him I read some info from different places on the internet about chevron's....one guy rates fish by stars 1 - 4, 4 stars being the most difficult. he gave this fish a 5 star rating. also, when I bought him, I purchased 2 neon gobies to keep my tangs clean....they really do good work on them! to ask a stupid question, I hear nori alot, but unable to find it. Is that a name brand or a kind of algea? how big is your chevron's & how long have you had them? thanks!!!

Go to any supermarket that carries Asian Food/Ingredients.

What you want is the dried seaweed paper used to make sushi. Make sure it is unseasoned! The packaged material I always see down here in the states looks like this:

$250 for a tiny chevron tang? This is insane. My dealer once offered me 100, and i said NO to him as this tang is rather unattractive when it grows bigger. Anyway, i fed my tangs seaweed salad, pallets, and rod's food. No fish will say NO to rod's food!!!!

I agree, $250 is insane. I have gotten very good livestock from blue zoo & didn't what to take a chance on a cheap fish that would die & have to buy it a second time (like "saltwater fish"....there fish sux!!! ). as far as the adult color goes, I like the adult colors from the pictures I have seen! I have a peaceful community tank & the chevron seemed to be a good fit....also, doesn't get 2 feet long. I felt I would have better luck with the small size. no regrets.

+1. I use the same brand and my fishes loves it. Also have this in 4.9oz value pack. Be very careful not to buy the seasoned one as it contains oil and sticky to the touch.

chevrons and other bristletooth tangs dont really go after algae on clips (nori mainly) it isn't the right texture for them. They do eat OGO which is more stringy. He will be perfectly happy with grazing

Your LFS should carry rod's food. Get the one that is herbivore blend. I try to control feeding with rod's food as i don't want my fish get addicted to it.......lol. Did you quarantine your chevron tang? I would turn off the light for a few days, just to make it less stressed. I recommend u to do the treatment on the tang to kill the parasite after gaining its appetite.

no I didn't quarantine, knowing that I really should...I did look it over good. I haven't seen any parasites! my concern is not getting enough algea & causing lateral line disease or something of that nature. I've been into saltwater for many years. 60 gl. before 300 gl. I'm not an expert by any means....that's why I'm asking the big boys! I do want to thank everyone for there help. I like to keep going with my education with the hobby. the 300 gl. has been a good set-up so far. trying to grow some simple corals, the fish are mainly my concern. I have a percula & a black clown that paired up with anemone....doing well. the clowns were very, very small when I got them. there maybe 2 inches now. the xenia though isn't looking to good. checked everything & nitrate is 10. I'm checking into bio pellets & plan on getting one soon. the problem is I can't find a good reactor I really like? I know this is getting off the subject a bit. I tried to post a picture of the chevron but couldn't figure out how to do it, my computer skills aren't that great.

Nitrates at 10 is not going to bother Xenia my friend.

As a matter of fact, it will more than likely do worse if you decide to go with the Bio-Pellets. I ran a ULNS, via Liquid Carbon Dosing instead of pellets, and all of my Xenia went down the tubes. Now all of the LPS and SPS loved the cleaner water, but xenia seems to prefer a more "nutrient rich" environment. I didn't mind much since I wanted to get rid of it anyways lol.




And FWIW.... seeing an Adult Coloration Chevron in person will change your mind. They aren't quite as flashy as when they are juveniles.... but they are still a gorgeous fish once the adult colors have come in completely.

I just also thought of something to try to get him to eat the Nori.

Try rubber banding it to a rock if he won't take it from a clip. If that still doesn't work wrap some of his favorite food in the nori (make it like a little pouch). That might get him to pick at it, once he does he'll take to it for sure.

You can also buy OGO Gracillaria from a variety of venders, or you can always grow your own. It's not the easiest macro algae to cultivate at home, but it isn't all that expensive to just purchase some. I usually order it when I order fish online, so I don't have to pay a ton of shipping on the algae itself. Tangs go absolutely nuts over the stuff.

I think the rock idea might work....good idea! about the xenia, since it's not the nitrate, could low water circulation be the cause because I did move my powerhead awhile back. I ordered some magnetic rocks online & when I installed them, had to move things around a bit.

Could be. My 180 was packed full of hard to keep acros when I had it up. Guess what was the only thing to randomly die w/o explanation...

The darn small patch of Xenia I had. Now I more than likely lost mine due to the water being too clean for the Xenia to survive..... but it still grew fine for 5 months.... then just randomly melted on me one day.

I think xenia likes a bit less flow personally. Mine would only pulse and fully extend when the flow near them was on the low end.

I noticed my xenia likes low flow and lean toward the light. They also melt away over a few months but lately I've been able to hold onto about 3 of them but with no growth. I skim on the wet side (I look at it like water change) so that may have something to do with it.
