Chiller DOA

Took delivery of an Aqualogic Cyclone 1/4hp chiller last week, but when I set it up over the weekend, I was disappointed to find that it simply doesn't work... fan functions, compressor seems to be running, but there is not the slightest cooling effect whatsoever. I've no idea what the problem is.

The manual says to contact their tech support directly in the event of problems, rather then the reseller, but I wanted to let Marine Depot know too. Unless Aqualogic can work some sort of telephone miracle, I assume I'll need to ship it back to them. The thought of having shelled out $700+, only to end up with a 50lb useless dead weight is not exactly pleasing. (and, of course, in the interim I''ve got a tank temp 'issue' to try and fight)

Hi Dave,

Thank you for ordering with us. We apologize about the problem you are having with the chiller. This very rare occurrence and it is very uncommon for these chillers to be defective. I have contacted Aqua Logic for you and they will be giving you a call later today. They need more information from you so they can figure out what is going on. Should you need any further assistance, you can contact me directly at 714.385.0080.

Dave, depending on your system vol. it may take a day or two for the temp to go down. Is the output water temp feel cooler than the your tank water?Bob

Thanks, all, for the responses.

I've talked it over with Aqualogic tech support, and they think it's a coolant loss issue, as there's simply no cooling effect at all, although the compressor and fan run.

They're shipping me a replacement, to swap out for the faulty unit. I should be able to nurse the tank temp until it arrives, no problem.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the update. We're glad that everything is straightened out.

Please let us know if there's anything we can help you with.

Ben

Update:

UPS delivered the replacement chiller yesterday.

Had a bit of a shock when I opened the box, as the plastic chiller case was cracked on one side, just near an attachment screw, and the front was broken away from the body over several inches. (that cover to frame mounting is really very poorly designed)

Anyway, I swapped the cover with the good one from my first unit, crossed my fingers, and plugged it in. Success! At last, I've a chiller that actually chills. :)

Called Aqualogic, who will contact UPS to pick up the old unit. When I told the customer service rep about the broken cover on the replacement, and mentioned that I'd swapped it with the good one, she said I should have filed a claim with UPS. Huh? I don't think so. Anyway, she didn't make a big issue of it, and all things considered they've been very responsive.

Thanks, too, to Marine Depot for helping out with the process.
