chiller question...

I've got a 75 gallon tank. 30 breeder frag tank, and 18 gallon tank on one system. plus the sump, it equals about 145 gallons. Does it make sense that my 1/4hp chiller would be on for atleast 1.5 hours to cool the water 1 degree? It's been on since 1pm and hasn't turned off at all. and the water hasn't cooled. Any help?

Was the chiller used when you bought it? Is the thermostat a reliable one? It sounds like you may have a freon leak in one of the lines.

ranco single stage temp controller is running it. it was used. traded some coral to my neighbor for it. would a freon leak be fixable or not?

I have a number for a guy who works on chillers down there in South Florida.
Aquarium Chiller Repair Service
954.565.5754
Let me know if that helps

yea...it's been on all day long with the 2 MH's and it can't pull the tank down 1 degree. I'm sure somethings wrong. I'm going to have to call that company and see what they can do.

update...chiller finally turned off...the mh's turned off at 11pm. so an extra 1 hr and 15 min to chill the tank 1 degree? I don't think that's normal...do you?

how much water are passing through the chiller? have you checked the actual temperature of the tank water and also the water coming out of the chiller? do you know if the ranco controller is working correctly?

Yes perhaps water is not flowing slowly enough through the chiller.
BTW I have an extra Ranco if u want to give it aa try- r/o controller issue.

i use a 1/4 on my 150 ( display) i use a mag 9.5 ( OMG O_O I WAS LOOKING FOR MY SPARE 9.5 ALL DAY AND JUST HIT ME THATS WHAT I USED IT FOR :( lol )

anyways it usualy comes on 1 hour at most randomly all day ( even at night on occassion) i have it set at 78 house is usualy kept at 70-75

tank has 770 watts of light when all lights are on ( currently just 330 )

something is definitly wrong with that chiller see if the water feels cold coming out.. on mine you can feel a difference.

also DO NOT put the chiller under the tank . you will just add heat back to the water.

if the water feels cold. it its your controller. i personaly dont like the rancos i prefer the medusa;s more

We keep my house hot, and I try to keep the tank in the low 80s, and my chiller runs a few times during the day, usually for more than 30 minutes at a time. it's a 1/4hp on a 120+15g setup with 2x250w halides in a poorly ventilated canopy.

Your chiller might have to run more since I think you told me it was outside, or even if it was in that tiny 85 degree room of yours :p.

If anyone is looking for a medusa controller, I'd sell mine as soon as I get an expansion socket, I just don't currently have the cash to float to have both in my hands.
