Chiller Recommendations?

I've been hoping to avoid one, but it appears inevitable for Phoenix to run a chiller. Any recommendations from the group? I'm running a Red Sea Max 650 (175 gallons).

Have fun at the event on Saturday! I'll have to catch the next one. Thanks.

Chris

I have never had to run a chiller, but I do have a lot of evaporation. I do have Kessil LEDS, so that helps with light induced heat.
I run 3 clip on fans over my tank, controlled by my Apex and my Temps stay at 79.

I have a 1/10 HP Artica chiller that I bought used and never set up because fans were enough. I will sell it for $100. I was told it was working fine when I bought it. But if it doesn't work, I will pay you $10 for gas since you came and picked it up, plus refund your $100.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm going to keep an eye on things over the next couple months as the house cools off. It appears a JBJ is in my future before next spring....

Vanpire - Thanks for the offer, but that unit sounds undersized for my tank.

I have a single 4x 3" PC fan setup one one end of my 8' tank (240gal), I never see above 80*. I do have 4x 150w MH and about 300w of custom LED.

What temps are you getting? Are you running MH?

Consider that if you can lower your AC temp a degree or 2 and be ok temp wise is usually more efficient than running a chiller power wise. Plus the chiller pump even more hot air into the house so you got more AC run time too

I'm sitting at 80-81 with the house at 78. The house will come down and the heat will come on for the winter, bringing that down.

Are you guys successful at 80? I was thinking 76-78 was going to be a better range. Not judging, just curious.

My tank runs at 79/80 in the summer and I do that on purpose. In the winter, I keep it at 77/78 because that's the temp with halides on in the winter. This doesn't seem to cause issues for my fish or corals.

I keep my house at 78 in the summer and 75 in the winter. Yes, I like it warm. I am in AZ boy through and through.

What are you running to have your temp go 2 degrees higher than the house? I run halides and that causes the temp increase, but it is steady at 80 with fans.

I keep my house the same, 78 summer and maybe even lower than 75 in winter. I am running all standard equipment right now (pumps, LED, skimmer). My AC or my thermometer may be a little off. I'll investigate further.

I'm glad to hear 79/80 isn't a big deal. Maybe I can avoid a chiller after all.

Thanks for the tips.

80* is not problem. Above 82* I start to worry. Basically the higher the temp fast something can go wrong. With good water quality higher temps are less of a worry. Its the combo of 85* and high nutrients that would cause bleaching, RTN, and even fish stress.

I keep house at 76* during the summer and stay at 79-80*. I also run a late lighting schedule as my LED come on at 4pm, MH at 7pm. Helps with the heat during the summer as well as that is when I am home the most seeing the tank.

My lighting schedule is similar to Jay. My MH comes on at 7PM because that is when my electricity is super cheap. Hard to beat $0.07/KWh.

I also don't get home till around 6PM so the lights are only when I am home.

I also have a s650. I run t5 and my temps are 79-82 roughly. To be honest as long as it isn't anything wild and crazy, stability is key. Big jumps harm more than a tank at 83 imo.

Try running a fan before jumping into a chiller. Honestly I am a fan of fans lol. Drive up evap, allowing more kalk in the ato.

I too keep my house at 76 throughout the summer, home or not. i have a 120g tank, with sump about 145g, and temps vary minimally +/- 1 deg but usually consistent around 79. i have four dual 33" t5 HO lights and only run one heater set at 76 for a safe guard and all seems to stay somewhat stable. thought about adding a fan but worried about noise. looked at chillers but not sure it is necessary for the $. Please update with whichever route you choose as I am interested in personal experience. thanks.

ReefingCZ - I'm going to leave things as is for now through the winter. Come springtime I'll see if the temps creep up with the weather and go from there. Thanks to the guys on here, I have several other suggestions before making the $800 plunge on a chiller. I'm running LEDs and the house stays very consistent.
