Chiller run in the stand?

Does anyone run a chiller inside their stand?

I'm considering running a chiller inline with the sump return, the chiller being on the second shelf of a stand, the sump below on the bottom shelf.

I know that this may put a lot of heat inside the stand. If I cut huge holes and put some major fans in the back of the stand, it may get a bit louder too.

Anybody run a chiller in their stand? Would my setup be ok, especially since heat rises? or would it be smarter to build an external chiller enclosure? The external enclosure would then actually increase plumbing loss quite a bit =(

Running a chiller in a stand is a sure fire way to ruin it (ex appliance repairman speaking here), unless you ventilate the crap out of it. Even then, if you restrict the output of the chillers fan, that could ruin it on it's on, despite the fact you ventilated the crap out of your cabinet.

oh... crap =)

ok that's great to know, that means I have no way of keeping the whole system inside the stand dimensions, I'll probably just build a small box next to the tank to conceal the chiller. MORE ROOM UNDER THE STAND!

thanks for the help gresh!

Heat is the major issue I see. A lot of people put theirs outside. After all, the point is to pump the heat away from your tank, right? Not just sweep it under the carpet.. err.. stand! ;)

You realize if you make a small box to put the chiller in, it's the same thing as it being in a stand as far as heat concerns (unless you ventilate the crap outta...)

Hey, if you build a 'small box' to 'conceal' the chiller, I would not only have an open back, but an open front as well. Cannot speak to all makes of chillers, but my inline needs to draw in air from the front, which is exhausted as hot air out the back (JBJ 1/5 arctica). BTW, the heat that it puts out the back is pretty substantial when running.

the other issue to consider is sound - there are several chillers that are quiet but even that may be extremely distracting depending on the room. You might look at some of the available chillers which are now out that are a little more aesthetic. Another issue is that the chiller's exhaust may heat up the room. Just some thoughts that I considered. Fortunately, I was able to put mine in the basement.

I have a 1/10 JBJ artica is to my suprise it's the quietest component of my tank after the Super Squirt. I'd have to look @ the LED to see if it's running or not other wise I can't tell.

yeah I was thinknig about the 1/10 JBJ or the 1/10 current usa ones that just came out.

I was also thinking of concealing it so that if my sister's puppy came over or some little kid came over, they wouldn't have access to buttons to push.

I could put the chiller in the basement... though again, I'm moving out soon so I'll have to rethink that.

I'm definately going to keep the chiller out of the stand, but where else I'm not sure...

For the JBJ you don't have to worry, in order to adjust temp setting, you must hold down the button for 5-10 second or something. So they can't juset accidently knock it and set it if that's what you're concerned about. I have 3 little kids here and I never have problem. I was skeptical about the JBJ unit for it's price but it's been saving my arse all summer. Highly recommended for value and quietness as well as efficiency. 300watts to cool down my tank and it only needs to run for an hour or two a day, that's heck of a lot better than 300 watt heater running all day during the winter.

yup, I set my tank @ 82 during the colder season and it always seems to go down to about 81 during the summer I set it @ 80 but and it stays around 81. what happens is the coil takes time warm back down even after it's off. As long as it can keep my tank under 83 in extreme heat, I'm happy.

never heard of the Current USA model but I like the compact size and the design of the JBJ. I did a lot of research on chillers specifically on the Artica 9/10 recommended it. I guess now it makes 10/11 recommends it. LOL

I just looked at the Current USA model. they look like a wanna be artica. Layout is almost the same, I wouldn't be suprise if the gut is the same cause the LCD sure looks the same to me. These chinese mfg are good at nothing else but rebatching and re labeling stuff. 80% of the stuff that comes out of china are knock offs.

Perhaps brianbigoats can give his inputs on the USA model.
