Will it grow coral and even sps - yes
Can you compare to say a hydra - no. A higher end light has higher end features. Wireless, controllability, someone to call when things don't work. Sure some of the Chinese lights have some controllability but so far cannot compare to a higher end light as far as controllability.
As far as coral response, I have used a Chinese 165w and an AI prime on a nano and the sps seemed to do better under the prime. However still did just fine under the Chinese led

Absolutely! I had a 180g tank full of sps and lps corals under 2 Chinese fixtures (the 32" versions).
What would be the difference between one of those lights and say a hydra?
As far as the light that they make, very, very little. As far as how your coral will respond to them, even less.
Some Chinese (more often called 'black box' fixtures now) are very basic with just 2 channels and manual dimmers. That's really all you and the coral need.
However, there are Chinese fixtures that have up to 6 channels of color control, sunrise/sunset intensity control, wifi, remote controls, slimmer modern looking cases and almost anything you'll find on higher end fixtures. The difference is how much profit you want to give to the seller or manufacturer!
Last what would be a good Chinese light?
From basic to top of the line Chinese fixtures I'd recommend: Mars Aqua, Galaxy Hydro, Viparspectra, Euphotica, and SB Reef. And these two are made in China, but they aren't the standard black box look and they offer higher end features along with slightly higher prices (but still much less than AI, or Radion) Reef Breeders, Maxspect.

I've used Radions and Black Boxes. I now use all black boxes.
Once the novelty of programmability wears off, you will probably not touch the settings except to show your friends.
My corals don't care if the lights ramp up and down, or just toggle on and off. They grow fine either way. As long at the light spectrum is good and you find settings your corals like, you can use either type.

And kmbyrnes is 100% right. The corals couldn't care less about sunrise/sunset. And after 3 or 4 tweaks of color adjustment with a 6 channel system, I haven't changed them since!

i got one thing bad to say about Chinese lights, if you buy them with warranty- Good luck with costumer service. i have 4 years experience with their costumer service, and its horrible. cant call them cause they barely speak English. Have to reach hem by email or chat room. and if something does break they want video/picture of it. And let say you have couple led's burn out (as it happen often) they will send you one led chip and tell you to take light apart and solder them in your self.
other then that cool looking lights that are controlled by my phone.

i have 6 of the vispar spectra lights . they are well over a year old and doing great.
Just be careful with the really careful with who you get them from.. Not all "Cheap Chinese " are created equal.

I had one about 6 years ago. It produced OK light, but it had loud fans, was a steel case rather than aluminum, and NO customer service. I'd like to think they have improved, but you see from lack of replies, almost nobody uses them. Why bother when you can get better service for the same cost?
Thanks for your input! The one I was looking it appears to be from aluminum and has a PWM control fan, 4 channels dimming for led, and decent light spectrum, but if any one know of a different light in the same price range I am open to suggestions!
