Chip In Glass On 80 Gal.

Alright please tell me it is not as bad as it looks.. I was cleaning up the tank that I got the other day and I noticed this chip. It is about 6" up on the side, the glass is 1/2" think. It does not seem to be cracked just a nice size chip that looks like it has been there for awhile. The silicone has not been disturbed in the tank. I guess the only thing I can do is to put some water in the tank and see if it leaks.

ouch! I think if I were in your shoes I would do what your saying, fill it with the garden hose in the back yard and see if it leaks...

Even then I don't know a whole lot about the structural integrity of glass, so you may want to get some others opinions on this one....

Water is in and not leaking as of yet.. Like I said the glass is 1/2" thick.

I would put some extra sealer on that spot.

I have a 20 gallon with a chip just like that. It never had a problem. Don't know if that means anything though--don't know a thing about the structural integrity of it either. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, I am going to give Kirkwood Glass a call, I had water in the tank for almost an hour and no leaks. While I am posting here I thought I would treat you all with a design that I came up with (Thanks Fade32) for a 29 gal. sump. I hope you all can see it I can't see to get it any bigger. One big problem with the design is that it can not accomidate an ASM G-1 which I wanted to get so what would be the next best skimmer?

I would place the skimmer over the sump design...your skimmer will do more for you than the sump. Plan the sump around the skimmer, it should take priority. I had to re-do my 20 gallon sump completely to make the G3 fit but it was worth it. The G3 was my 5th skimmer in a year...it should have been my first purchase.

Should I make the refugium smaller or the return? Or should I change them both and give myself some more room for the skimmer. The ASM G-1's footprint is 8.5 X 11. I guess what I need to know is the refugium more important than the return or vise versa?

If you are just going to grow some chaeto in the fuge I wouldn't worry about making it too small. I like larger return areas, it gives a little more flexibility on time you can be away from it to replenish the topoff level.

I did mine a little differently, I have no divider between the water inlet, the skimmer and where I grow chaeto. My only divider is before the return pump. Chaeto doesn't care if it is seperated or not. The only issue is if the skimmer will suck in chaeto....can't happen in my setup, the maxijet that feeds the skimmer is in a bucket with the drain line from the main tank. If you plan on having a dsb in the fuge...things change greatly.

I agree with Sirreal. Design your sump around your skimmer. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to use the skimmer you want because of the sump. Make sure you can fit the skimmer you want during the design phase. Just my 2 cents.

I am thinking about making a separate "Skimmer Box" and then have that drain into the main sump. So I have a bit more room I will use the 1/4" Acrylic for the baffles on the 29 gal. and build the skimmer box out of the 3/8" that I have. Do you guys think a 12X12 box will be big enough. That way I can put the ASM G-1 into the box and cut a bulkhead for the return.

Is the skimmer box draining into the main sump via gravity? If so do you have enough height to accomplish that (assuming this is going in the stand and not in a separate room or basement)? You can make a skimmer box and use a pump to move the water around if you need to.
