Chloroquine phosphate in a reef tank

b0bab0ey: Any thoughts on the "reef-safe'' aspect of CP? That seems to be a major concern of asonitez; who brought this thread back to life. I don't think any of the malaria/quinine drugs have been called "reef safe'', the holy Grail of fish meds. When I do try this, with an ich-positive from a little LFS; I'll add a couple of coral frags and shrimp too. I would expect dead inverts.

I thought I read somewhere that sometimes crustaceans can tolerate it, but it's almost always lethal to corals/anemones. Hopefully alprazo will see this thread and chime in. He knows a lot more about CP than I do.

One thing I do know... it's one helluva algicide. Back when I was treating my PB Tang with it - afterwards I ran lights, ran carbon, did a bunch of WCs - I never could get algae to grow in that QT!!! My tang was not happy about that either!!!

I'd assume a strong algiicide could be ruled out for reef use.

Tagging along and subscribing to this thread since I just received my CP in the mail but haven't decided what I'm going to do with it yet.

I suggest using it in a bare bottom QT, the same setup you'd use for copper treatment. I use a dosage of 40mg per gal.

I would highly suggest you don't use it in your DT if you have corals/inverts.

Well then I guess I better go out this weekend and buy some ich-infested fish. Gee, that oughta be hard to find, huh?

Ever since I got my hands on CP, I've been looking for a fish with visible trophonts so I can photograph and document CP treatment. Guess what? I haven't been able to find one. The two LFS nearby even have my # and I haven't gotten one call saying, "We got one with Ich we wanna sell you!!!"

Petco.. they have an abundance of ICH.

Just an update:

I got Dr.G's from a guy I paid 1 bux to to go to a fish store on the interwebs purchase 3 packs. Deep Freeze it in a Freezer inside a small block of ice in side of a tupperware bag and mail it to me. IT got to me with like only a shot glass full of water free....

150 gallon tank... Lots of fish...

#1 - Fish did not eat it. !!!!!!!! Tasted it and spit it right out :( Some ate it but they didnt like it.

I got smart and soaked it in Selcon with a double dose of Garlic.

Fed it and fish went NUTS... (It also helps that I starved them for 4 days before I fed it.)

#2 - About 3 days after feeding it daily 2X a day I saw lots of bruises and holes on my tang. I Switched to some of the Anti Bacterial food and started feeding Anti Protozoan in the morning and antibacterial in the afternoon which everyone liked.

#3 - About 6 days after starting the treatment fish were extremely healthy and swimming so much better. My Powerblue tang no longer looked like someone sprinkled flakes on him and I could only see traces of ich in his FINS.

# 4 - About Day 10 I started seeing some corals recede a little bit and polyp extension wasn't as robust. Nothing was dieing though. Shrimp seemed to be okay I had lost some scavenger crabs though. I did a 20 Gallon water change on my 200gal volume and like magic things were up and open the next day. (I also changed my carbon and GFO) I cannot attribute this wholly to the medication as I think these filters were due for a change..

# 5 - No Ich visible on anyone. Fish look healthy and are swimming but I still kept feeding.

#6 - Day 14 and everyone is looking real good. I have also been running a 14 Day KickICH regimen through the tank with no averse affects. DR.G said the 2 wouldn't cause a problem//

I will continue off my cycle for the next few days and monitor the changes. So far I am ICH free.

Things I would do to be safe.

Have 20/30 Gallons of fresh Salt water made up and ready for use. Run Carbon for the entire duration of the treatment. (I ran carbon during my medication food treatment but took it offline during KickICH treatment)

Feed I Area of the tank with NO PUMPS RUNNING FOod should stay suspended in the water until they are eaten. I once left my pumps off for 3 hours until the food I'd overfed was eaten.

More info and reviews... some good stuff entailed.

Well the URL won't work, but google "Dr. Gโ€™s Medicated Frozen Foods for piece of mind" and you can see more info on this medicated food product.

I contacted Dr. G's about finding a distributor in my city, if there is one.

Has anyone had any luck finding this food online?

From what I heard is that fish can taste the CP and spit it out. You need Focus to bind the CP to the food if you want to try to feed it to them. Good luck.
