Choosing a Clown?

I am trading my two false percs and gbta into the LFS today. I was consedering getting a black false ($125?!), a tomatoe, maroon, a clarkii, or true perc. I am only going to get one, and it will be in the tank with a Yellow watchman goby, and a fire fish. Any suggestions? Would my 29g be alright for the maroon?

Maroons get big and aggressive pretty fast, so I wouldn't put one in a 29 gallon (at least, not for very long.) Same with the tomato, and the Clark's clown, although the Clark's will grow more slowly. I would go for the true perc, or the black false perc, although $125 seems a bit like highway robbery to me ($50 is more common for a black, at least here in New Mexico.)

I went with the black perc, and did a lil wheelin and dealing and ended up in the that range you stated. I am super pumped! I actually didnt take him home today, gone observe a couple and ifgure out which one I want. The only ? now is should I go misbarred or solid barred? In an ideal world I will be upgrading tanks in a year or two, and would move this fish to the new larger tank. I would then get it another false perc to hopefully pair with. Would the misbarred characteristic travel down to the babies hypethetically?( Or would the solid 3 barring characteristic travel down in the opposite case?)

if you're going for a single clown...and you're willing to pay $125...i'd get a picasso clown from ORA (you can get a grade A for that $$$)...or an onyx from rod's reef (~$50 +/- depending on the size and coloration)...those look a lot better than black osc IMO.

I will not end up paying in the 125 range closer to 50 range. I am considering a Rod's, we'll see I guess.

had a pair of false percs, got too territorial in my small tank. eventually when i get in my new place and upgrade my tank, shell get a new little man

Hey Premium aquatics has blacks for 34.99 and they are right around the corner from me. I dont know where they get them but I have not seen a bad one yet(diformed face or sick). At the same time the batch I saw this weekend almost all of them had half or drip stripes in center stripe!!

Billy do you desire the misbarred thing? I guess i have the option for misbarred or perfect bars.

well if they are still young the might be misbarred now but there bars might fill in all the way or stay misbarred. I have to misbarred percs now but they are only around a year old so maybe they will be misbarred or maybe be full percs never know until they get older. Me myself i prefer misbarred as they have a different look to them.

I know this is a highly discussed topic(as i have been reading all about it today) but even if you have two misbarred(assuming adults) or one missbarred and tehy had babies there is nothing to say that all would end up perfectly barred or all misbarred correct. It has to do with environment during meta. correct? atleast it has an effect just as much as the parents patterns. am i correct in this?
