Chopping a tank? Possible?

I was recently given a tank that measures 8'x2'x3' made of 1" thick acrylic. The tank is nice, but is not really what i had in mind for a large tank. My question is it is possible to cut the top off, replace it with a new piece of solid acrylic, lay it on it's side and cut a hole in what is now the viewing panel. Not sure if that makes sense, but I pretty much want to turn a tall tank into a prop type tank.

probably not, or at least not without beefing up what used to be the bottom, since they probably used thinner acrylic on the bottom.

The material is 1" thick on every panel. It was extremely heavy for an acrylic tank. Trust me I wouldn't even consider this an option if the tank was not as beefy as it is.

well. then there is the issue of what which panel rests on what. acrylic tanks seem to always be built with the sides directly on the bottom panel, not around the bottom panel.

wow, I didn't even think of that a being an issue, but your right. Just took a look at both tanks and they are constructed that way. I guess the answer is no.
thanks
