Chromis in QT

Brought home a small school of Chromis a few days ago. All looked healthy and were active when they were put in the QT. One is now hovering near the bottom is not as active and doesn't seem to eat much. It appears to have an injury or infection of his mouth. The area is noticeably red and looks as if something very tiny is attached to his chin. The others all seem to be acting normally.

I did a water test tonight and the ammonia was at 0.3 mg/l. I have done a 50% water change using water from the DT which is fully cycled and healthy.

I am wondering if it could be a bacterial infection. I recall that one of it's tankmates had a similar looking condition on it's side.

Any suggestions? Is there a medication that I should use in the QT as part of normal quarantine?

Too Late

Chromis bit the dust. For future reference are there any products that should be used as a preventive measure during QT. Maybe something that would treat for bacterial, fungus, and external parasites? I've heard there are products that are a combination of different medications.

Comments on dangers or advantages?

Your QT should have been cycled as well and there should have been no ammonia in the QT.

Most medications will not destory nitrification bacteria and so can be used in QT. Exceptions are some antibiotics such as chloromycetin.

Other antibiotics like neomycin and kanamycin will only depress the nitrification bacteria somewhat. You will have a low level of nitrite but little ammonia.
