I know this is a Saltwater Reef group but I heard there are a lot of memebers who keep freshwater fish. Since there are no freshie clubs in the I would like to join yours if you any keeps cichlids.

Have you ever thought of trying a reef ? I think its time to come to the reef side , Young hibobbo walker.....

actually i almost started a cichlid tank.... and then saw a reef tank and that was that.... cichlids are way to expensive for me .

I did cichlids before I did my saltwater tanks. Some of them can be pricey... I ended up giving all the cichlids to a co-worker's wife and switching to saltwater though...because it's so much nicer looking.

Unfortunately for the cichlids...she lost them all during a tank move :(

Well you guys are going to love me. I just converted at 220 gallon saltwater tank to freshwater. I am going to be filling it with Cyphotilapia Frontosa "Mipmbwe" (The King of Lake Tanganyika). It is not about the expense but just personal preference and I have a thing for those crazy cichlids and their fry.

I plan on doing the same. While I like my reef. I really miss the dwarfs. I am planning on getting a 120 for angels and dyscrossus filamentosa. (sp) I love the planted tanks that just can't be matched in SW. For those who say reefs are more colorful or better looking that's like saying orange is a better color than red.
Cichlids do have something you don't get in saltwater, and that is the metalic blues, reds and yellows of the Peacocks. The only problem in this town is to find a good FW store.

Why not have both?

Why not have both?

I must agree on having cichlid tanks. I have a 125 "mixed" cichlid tank and a 90 reef. The cichlid tank provides the massive movement that my famiy likes and the reef is for me. I put sand on the bottom of my cichlid tank with live plants and I think it looks great. It's 6 years old and I'm on my 4th or 5th generation of babies. The colors are a great contrast/compliment to the reef.
Hibbobo, definitely research plant types if you want them. Some just wont make it with the Africans.
ED, Fish Maniac on Beach at 9A is the best in town for cichlids. They have saltwater also, but I must say the FW side is their best.

I agree i love planted tanks as well. I have never actually had one, but wen i see some of the top planted tanks in photos they are amazing. I also love reef tanks, and yes we do have the metalic blues, reds, and yellows. If your good enough you can even breed saltwater fish.

A little off topic but I have a brand new never used diatom filter someone must want. $75.00 including shipping. Let me know by pm

I had a Frontosia for about 10 years -- he was huge and was a great fish -- I kept some Calvus as well along with brichardi -- check out this pic --

I converted completely to salt about 2 years ago -- If I had the room and $$$ I would enjoy having them again...
