clam ate a purple tang

i just started working at a lfs and one of the brand new purple tangs which was in the same holding tank as about 20 clams, (croceas, maximas, derasa) got squished by a closing clam. tang was about 3 inches and the clam was about 5 inches. Is this at all common, i had no idea they could close that fast, or that tangs could be so slow.

we had to rip the tang out as the clam wouldnt open, and it has now been a whole day later and the clam still hasnt opened.

any thoughts?

wow. I should tell my lfs. they have 3 baby chevrons in theyre clam tank.. (about 60 clams)
