Clam attached to rock 'sideways'

My new Maxima has been a real pain to get to attach. I've tried several small relatively flat rocks and he pushes himself off.

Today, he finally attached to the very edge of a rock: he is now attached sidways, and his weight is suspended by his foot (not flat on the rock).

Is this safe? Should I just let him be? Will his weight be too much for his foot? (and how do I know it's a he :) ).

can you turn the rock so the clam is sitting right? If not it will probably drop from the rock in time. There is no way to tell a clams gender. I am thinking I may have heard they can change gender. Maybe mbbuna knows.

Well you were right -- he detached last night. I created a little rock 'corral' to try to get him to like the flat side of the rock. Such a beautiful little clam, but such a pain in the neck.
