What happens when the clam grows? Will it even be able to grow with the putty rock wrapped around it? Sounds like a ploy to sell more putty to me, since you're going to need a bunch of it to make a 1/4" plate to wrap around your clam...
I understood it to be just a shallow impression that you rest the clam in -- a flat disc (1/4"?) of underwater epoxy which you then imprint just the bottom of your clam into and then it attachs to it. Would certainly be ugly if is too big to settle into the sand.
I don't have clams but a saw one at the LFS that had managed to bore into a piece of liverock of some sort. Don't know how that works.
Anyway, the base idea may or may not have potential to protect a clam from bristleworm or p-snail attack, and it may or may not keep clams from being knocked over. Don't like it? Don't try it.
I did a modified version. I mounted the clam, which had already attached itself to a half oyster shell, to live rock using the epoxy putty. I tried super glue, but my darned snails would keep knocking my clam over!
