clam deaths and tanks

I was wondering if there was a way to clear the infection from the tanks. I read the post on how to tret the clam in a seperate container, but what happens when you put the "cured" clam back into the same infected environment. Will it not get sick again? I'm just trying to figure out how to treat my tank in case this happens. I really don't want to have to unload my whole tank. Just seeing if anyone had any ideas
Thanks

I'm not sure of the lifecycle of the aforementioned lifecycle. If there isn't a host, most bacteria will die off on their own. This particular strain is quite nasty as it doesn't stay within a host, and tends to move on to all the clams that are in your tank. It would be curious to see what effect some UV's on a tank would have in preventing this infection (although, possibly minimal, as once infected, it affects the clam internally - which a UV never gets a crack at killing).

I've got clams, and I've got UV - but I'm not sure I'm willing to bring the bacteria in to test this kind of thing :).

anthem,
preliminary reports from toxicology point towards flavo bacteria. I am questioning it's presence in intense lighting. Since my 11 clams have died I am now having problems with SPS colonies. No polyp extension and physical changes.

:eek2:

saltkreep,

Do you notice any tissue lose on your acro's?
I'm also haveing problem with my acro's too, it started when my clam die, My acro's are slowly lossing tissue, first it was miliporo, now other acro's are lossing tissue. keep your eye's on your acros.

Man this is getting scary

reefmkr,

Sorry about your loss, how many clams did you lose? It sounds like you have a problem with RTN. I have not had any tissue loss YET. I am trying to deal with lack of polyp exstension and the physical morph's. There are spikes growing out of my branching acro's. LFS are very confused! I have lost some coloration. It all started with the clams!

Just a few ??????'s if I may!

When did you buy your clam or clams?

where did you buy them?

what was your last SPS that was added & how is it doing?

I also had a problem with tissue loss on acros after I discovered I had the clam disorder. Massive water changes on my 150 seemed to have slowed things down a lot. I lost 5 clams in 3 days when I realized I had the problem. I was able to save 3 clams. I lost quite a few Acro's too. All my tests on the tank were fine and there was no explanation for such a die off. I then realized I put a Ponphei clam in at the start of the problem.

Well, I'm now losing clams. I am wondering how long people are going to wait to restock their tanks? I don't want to repeat this problem again by restocking to soon? Will people start with deresas since they are more hardy to start as their initial clam?

What's up doc, :D

As far as wait time it is unknown at this time. The last time this happened there was a 5 to 6 month wait time. Why this period of time; Who knows :twitch: However we are not sure if we are dealing with the same problem, bacteria, etc. I think when I re stock, months from now I will start with a max. Derasa's seem to be stronger. However, it's possible that a derasa can be a carrier and can infect new additions before he shows signs of being ill.

I did two water changes of thirty five gallons each, one week apart on my 150 . My tank is 77 deg. This thing has slowed down to a crawl but is still killing the clams. Just at a slower pace. One out of my last three kicked off yesterday. I see another extending slightly less each day. I have one large max I got from Barry showing no signs yet. Yet! I'm sure it's going to happen.

Sorry for late reply.

When did you buy your clam or clams?

I bought all my clams at different time, first one was added to my tank about 1yr ago, last one was added little over monuth ago.

where did you buy them?

I bought 2 gold maxima from Jim Norris, and I bought 2 color maxima from LFS.

what was your last SPS that was added & how is it doing?

I don't know the name but, it acro that one is doing good so far (knock on wood)...
