Clam Growth

Most of the Tridacnid clams I see in people's tanks are reasonably sized, even though some species grow incredibly large in the wild. Are they this small because they are all still young, or can they sense size limitations and slow (stop?) their growth? Will they grow until they hit something solid?

Some clams like crocea don't grow very big anyways and are hardly a "giant" clam in my opinion. I think 5 inches is what they max out as. Some like deresa get pretty hefty and I've never seen an aquarist allow them to punch through the walls with growth, but I imagine it could happen... these things will grow if they have the nutrients necessary.

What about people who keep T. Gigas? Do they all end up being euthanised?
