clam ID

I feel stupid, i ended up getting this clam because i felt sorry for its old home. All i know about it was that they called it a "golden clam"
It is about three and a half inches, and is fully extended (i think) under the lights i have.
i am hoping its a Squamosa, because of lighting issues at home. It is parked exactly eight inches from my PC's and is happy, open, and retracting when any fish goes near. My calcium is good, my water perameters are in range...(nitrates are there, which i heard was good for these guys) I have phytoplanton to feed, if i need to and from what i have been reading i do need to.
I don't use addatives anymore, i used to but found water changes were much better for the corals i keep and the dosing was really rough on them.
This is a 46 bow, with a few damsels, and three little percs. there is roughly 40-50 pounds of rock, a 3-4inch sandbed, sloped to the front and the tank is in really good shape.

ANYWAY, I need an ID please! what is this? Squamosa? Maxima?
what have i got, and do i need to find a mh sometime soon?
It is under 192Watts of PC, one 10000k, one actinic....
go ahead, give me the bad news, couldnt let it die where it was.
BUT had to try right?

bummer, now i have to go get a MH pendant...sigh...anyone got one for sale? probably in the 175w range? gosh this hobby takes over...

you dont have to have Mh, it is recommended though. They will do okay under PC though, especially if placed high up in the tank. I have five of them and they did just fine for months under VHO before I got a Halide system installed. Their colors improved a bit after the Halides were installed.

Valexia,

it looks like it's a gold maxima, which should do OK under PC's as long as it's high up in the rockwork.

the "colored" maximas and croceas (esp. the croceas) really need MH lighting to live.

other clams that will do well under PC's are T. derasa, T. squamosa, and H. hippopus.

happy clam-keeping!

really? you guys think he'll be okay? hes like parked six-maybe eight inches (total) from the light, on a halfshell in the rockwork...
I was wondering why he was brown...didn't think it was a maxima...
Thanks for not making me feel bad...it would have died if i didn't snag him

Some people call that brown you are seeing gold. I know what you mean though. Check the clamsdirect site. They currently have photos similar to yours.

i see, the mantle is goldish/brown ahhhh yes. There are the flutes. Hes totally opening up and has a bluish tint, the outline is bright yellow. Pretty little thing...sorry for the blur, this is taken from the surface looking down
:p
