Clam info

Got this today, picture is from right after it was placed in the tank (sorry had to leave right after, but I took the pictures with me).

Side looks like something is wrong? Clam ID? Maxima?
It's on the sand to acclimate it to the light (Aquactinics 5x54W T5 individual reflectors). It will be moved up though.

it's hard to say if anything is wrong, let him get acclimated and post top down pic tomorrow or the next day.

Any idea on the price of these guys (not trying to sell, just curious what they run for)? I only purchased the small Maxima (about 2"), so this 3-4" Crocea is entirely different to me.

he looks fine to me, maybe a little scared in the second one ( he probably just reacted to you being above ) but that is totally normal.

for the price, its hard to say ( i'm in canada ) but we pay about $35 - $50 for that size.



PS: looking back at the second set of picture, he does look a little bleached but that may be from the LFS ( what type of light did they have him under ) and it looks like you have already moved him up some.

Got him off a local in a trade, no idea what kind of lighting, but I know my water quality is probably 100% better than what he was in (they used tap water). Figured I'd give him a try.
Now I think they had the Orbit fixture, either T5 or Power Compacts, from what it looked like.

His colors are brighter in person, I just can't get pictures that well, considering I can barely stand over the tank! He's a bright purple with a bright blue outline (looks greenish in pictures). He's really pretty, just unsure. I know my tiny 2" Maxima was $50 in the stores, things bigger are always $100+ it seems, but I'm on the East Coast US, so things are always more for some reason.

I'll be watching over the next few days to see how he changes. I know the Maxima doesn't have the partially open side(?) like the Crocea. Guess that's a Crocea thing, as I've seen it with others?

i would bet they were PC's.

what i am referring to as bleaching are the white patches on the mantle, not the over all color. this is a sure sign the clam has been kept in unacceptable lighting conditions. if you have already moved him up some i would leave him there for a few days. if he doesn't lose anymore color maybe move him up to 1/2 or a little more. the crocea is the most light demanding of the tridacnids and it could take some time to recover.

Thanks for your help, as I'm new to clams over this past month, and couldn't pass up the trade (and hopefully the ability to rescue) this big guy. It was a great deal on my end at least, as stores here are expensive, and not always healthy.

I'll be monitoring his changes over the next days and weeks and hopefully he will get better. It's a 24" deep tank, he's about 17" down, as we need to get more live rock to fill the tank (there is over 100lbs in there right now, just very dense), so hopefully he gets better, otherwise I'll be moving things to make him higher.
