I think you can probably put him wherever you want. A 20 long isnt that deep of a tank and it probably wont make much of a difference. If it starts bleaching, move it off to the side where its dimmer.
IME - Croceas like to attach to something hard like rocks.
watts per gallon isn't a good way to measure or determine where animals should be placed.
What kind of lighting are you talking about? If it's something like PCs you're going to want the clam up as high as possible to give him a chance of survival. It's it's MH then you could put him on the sand without worry.
i think he will be fine on the sand, just but him on a flat peice of LR so the bristals do not get him. the clam will tell u if he is happy or not, if he is fully opening i would say he is fine
That's not true. Clams will open fully and even overextend their mantles in an effort to get more light when they are light deprived. Also, unlike corals clams will most often not give signs they are in trouble until it is way too late.
this is IMO... i can tell when they are in need. maybe this is your rule of thumb but not mine. this has worked in many tanks, with many calms. maybe you are right but like i said this works for me.. ; )
the angler won't bother the clam like eat it or anything the worst thing that he could do would be to sit on it or if your talking about tank size the angler is already full grown at about 4in
