Clam problem?

I had a crocea clam for about 5 months now on the sand bed. it seemed to be doing fine untill recently i noticed that a web like substance would start to build up from the bottom of the clam..

i dont have a camera that is good enough to capture the substance cause its so thin....

anyone have an idea of what it maybe ?

no wrasses,

far as i can tell really no fishes that goes up to it... i have a yellow tang that swims back and forth over it and i see it may scare it a bit... but thats about it...

its sorta out in front of the tank by itself... i finally picked it up with sand surrounding it and it seems like the foot is being damged.. .melting maybe?

would it be somethign eating at it?

hey! i just checked out that snail like, i think it is that!

i do see that thing on it.. any way of cleaning it away? pest or something i dont need to worry too much about? thanks!

Hm.... ok i havent been able to pay attention to my aquarium these days and today when i did get the few minutes to look in... i saw a huge chunk of meat. and it looked like what could be the foot of the clam. and it was just floating around on bottom ...

i took it out of water but i had to leave, the clam still alive.. does this mean its doomed?

not necessarily, as long as he dropped it himself he should be able to recover. you might want to move him up on the rock and get him off the sand bed. what type of lights do you have?

i'm wondering if the web was actually the byssal threads?

oh man i havent been at home for last few days but i hope its fine.
i have the tek 6x36" t5 lighting. it seemed to be doing fine for so long already. the tank is not that high of a tank. 18" high, id say with sand bed and stuff the clam id say is 16" from top of water, max. the light i shung 3" above water line...

when i checked last night the clam is still responsive so hes not dead dead yet... i waved my hand over tank and it did receeded a bit..

I would bet its just its bysal glands it has lost. same happened to my clam 8 months ago.... i think it grew back, if thats possible. but anyway, it does still attach itself using bysal cords, which look like webs strings coming from the bottom of the clam to attach itself to the substrate. ..... sorry, but I would guess you made the same rookie mistake I made.... i put the clam on the sand, it attached itself, and I played around with it, causing it to lose/eject its bysal gland... but, my clam is just fine now. try to just leave it alone, they dont like to be touched

i have the tek 6x36" t5 lighting.

what combination of bulbs are you running?

can you post a top down pic?

You also need the get him onto the rockwork. Croceas clams are boring clams and they like hard substrate to attach too, IE: rock work or hard dead coral rock......

bulb combo? thats a bad one haha im using 4 10k and 2 pure actinics
and they are not the greatest in brands...

but i do plan to get new ones once i start my new job next month.

it seems like it has attached itself to the shell i left underneath him in the sand bed. i hope he turns out ok.

thanks for the advice john.. that sounds exactly like what happened here with my clam.
