Clam Question

Since moving to the new tank, my clam isnt extending his mantle as far as he did in the old tank. At first he did but now it barely makes it past his shell.

Any ideas why? He is under a 400w bulb maybe not enough food in the water yet?

Details,
Is it on the sand, on rocks, where it was previously ?

What size it ?
Anything over 3 inches requires pretty much only photosynthesis.
Even if there was not food to filter I do not think the mantle would shrink, it would expand to catch light to compensate for lack of suspended food.

Anything near it possibly stinging it ?
Any of your fish, new or old pestering it ?

Check for pyrimid snails. They are very small, white, and dunce hat shaped.

Are the colors okay ?
Is it bleaching or browning out ?

I like Phills guess tho.

Its on the sand, was on the sand

Its over 6" Nothing near by except yellow polops. No new fish seem to be even noticing it. No snails around it either. Colors seem to be normal maybe a bit darker.

I will get a pic up in a bit

Thanks Steve

try posting the pics in the clams forum here, it almost looks like the early stages of pinched mantle disease, which would mean freshwater dips. id definately post over there to get more opinions before dipping it though

i thought i read some where if they don't get enough light than they open up more and color starts turning brown color but if light is good than no need to open up more and colors will be bright. Kinda like anenome if they do not get enough light they will spread out more and expand to catch all the light they can. Not 100 % but i remember reading this somewhere.
