Clam Requirements

I originally planned to make my 40 breeder an LPS/softie tank, so I was going to go with an ATI Sunpower 4 bulb fixture. I think clams are really cool though and I have considered giving them a try. I know I would have to increase my lighting to an ATI Sunpower 6 bulb fixture. Would I have to increase anything else? I hear that clams suck calcium out of the water, so would a kalk stirrer be enough? I am not really interested in SPS, just a clam. Oh and before I get ahead of myself, would a clam even fit in a 40 breeder tank? Thanks in advance everyone

just put kalk in your top off, what i do is mix it in one bucket and pour the clear stuff in my ato.

you could do a crocea clam. They are stay much smaller than the other commonly found species (Maxima, Derasa, Squamosa). They do consume calcium as they grow (build their shell); but I wouldn't call it anything extraordinary.
they are rock-boring clams; as such they can be placed up in your rock work or if down on the sandbed, best if placed on a rock it can bore into down there.

I have a Deresa clam on the sandbed of my 75g growing under 4x54w T5s in a Tek fixture. I do keep a longer photoperiod (12/10 hours) because I don't have 6 bulbs. In your shallower tank using an ATI fixture (way better than my Tek) I think you could grow clams under 4 bulbs. If you want some of the really high light clams like a Crocea place it high up on the rocks.

With a 4 bulb SunPower over a 40breeder, you should be able to keep the crocea (or any other commonly found clam-- all others just get much bigger) down on the sand as long as its not in the shade.

I wouldn't say they suck calcium if you pay attention and dose accordingly it won't be a problem- my least favor part of a clam is they can spray coral with sand if they are in a sand bed - I moved mine to Rock so he does dust my frags - overall if I have a ya k you can look top down - they are amazing and fun to have
