Part 1) A while back, though I'm not sure, it may have been melevreef; I recall seeing a setup someone used for their juvenille clams (2-3"). It was made out of acryllic and resembled a smaller tank with support arms. At that height in the tank, the clams had no problem absorbing sufficient light. Whenever the person needed to feed the clams, he/she would simply raise the 'holder' by placing a 2x34 underneath the support arms so that the lip of the holder tank was above the water line. Then, he/she would proceed to fill the small holding tank (well, i guess you could call it a tank) chock full of phytoplantkton. when he/she saw that the clams had filtered it al out to a lighter green hue, he/she would remove the 2x4 and lower the tank so that the water could circulate again.
My question: Does anyone know the link to the 'clam holder' apparatus? If not, are you aware of someone who has tried a similar project for their clams?
Part 2) What is a good guide for lighting as far as clams (T. deresa, maxima, crocea) that can be used to determine the appropriate setup for different sized tanks?
For a 20" tank, could i use a 2x36w kit from AHsupply?
Also, are there any other appropriate setups that can be used from that provider?
I remember something about the smaller the clam (adult size) the more light it needed. (ie; croceas needing more than maximas) Is this true?
Part 3) I would like to setup a tank w/ clams as the main focus. However, I am limited to a degree spacewise, so probably something around the lines of a 33 gallon tank or smaller, untill i can either find another appropriate sized tank or room. This means that the majority, if not all of the clams, will be croceas. What are the considerations I need to be aware of in order to ensure that the clams are kept in the healthiest environment?
Part 4) Besides their light needs, I know that most reefers find it beneficial to use some sort of alterior feed material. what kind of food is most appropriate, how much/how often should it be given, and how do these requirements change over time (clam maturing changes)?
Part 5) I am aware that a smaller tank will not have as much conditional stability. In most cases, sumps and Auto top offs can increase the stability of the tank if run properly, correct? I am also aware that these clams will need large amounts of calcium compounds in the water to get successful growth. what are the most efficient ways that I can ensure there are the right amounts of calcium compounds in the tank?
Part 6) What problems has anyone run into when purchasing clams on the smaller or juvenille side? specifically hydro/photoacclimation, predation, infestation+quarantine+treatments, conspecific tolerances, and overall hardyness?
Part 7) what is the best way to limit the likelyhood of an infestation among a clam colony? are there ways to quarantine the clams seperately upon arrival so that future issues can be avioded treated? What are the top predators/parasites of the Tridacnid clams? What is the best treatment for each?
Part 8) I have seen a total of three, possibly more, reported spawning events here on RC and abroad. Is thesre a healthy way of encouraging the clams to spawn? What are the chances of raising successful young? What accomodations would have to be made? What are some key issues to watch for?
Part 9) what is the most appropriate tank setup for clams in regards to things like substrate, dimensions, filtration, flow, etc?
As far as rockwork and substarte is concerned, what is most appropriate for the health of the clams?
Also, for thse of you familiar with DSB's 'leaching', are there any conditions or concerns that need to be addressed as the clams age?
Part 10) Are there any other occurances, conditions, diseases, or any other possible issues that need to be kept in mind when keeping clams?
thank you .
