hey guys,

My tank is coming up on ten months now! still pretty new but i was wondering if you guys think im ready for a clam.

tank specs are 55g reef with softies and lps in at as of now but might have a few sps here and there. i have a 6-54w tek light.
parameters have been steady with good numbers.

are there any steps i shoudl take, or am i ready to put a clam in there. which type should/ could i get IYO.

thanks,

kevin

maybe a dersa, or gigas but the gigas will out grow the tank in a year or two. crocea and maxima are high light clams. i would stay away from them.

croceas and maximas only really do well under halides. other will have different beliefs but in my experiance they are healthier with the halides.

na i had one under pc's for about six months. then traded it to someone.

kevin heres an idea how fast a gigas grows heres a pic of mine yesterday. its about six inchs now. when i bought it a year and a half ago it was only an 1 1/2".

thanks ray,
what about squamosa's? are they more high light halides?

That would be my recommendation. They aren't as colorful as other more demanding clams, but very nice in their own right. Start with a Squammie. Another good point about the Squamosa, you can put them on your rock work to get them closer to the light. I tried that with a Maxima once, he kept jumping down to the sand.

very nice mike!

i think im going to start with a squamosa...i love the unique color in them and variation in pattern.

thanks guys

Just one more thing, don't go for a tiny (3" or less) clam as they need target feeding regularly. Go with a nice 3 1/2 or 4" clam that is already able to photosynthesize.
