Clam with snailshell inside

I have a clam that has been on its side despite numerous efforts - rubble, shells etc placed around it. I realized that there was a snail shell attached to its bottom which was forcing it on its side - I delicately removed the shell the other day but noticed that I could see inside (from the bottom) the clam, and there was a smoother snail shell attached inside. Mind you, these are the shells of snails past, not live predators, but still, this shell is essentially inside my clam. The clam is now standing up and not falling over, but is gaping more than normal. I wish I had read the thread about "leave it be" before I took action, but what is my next move? Sit and wait?

Thanks,
Ed
