Clam

I was wondering about when the right time would be to get a clam. I really want one, but need to make sure myself and my tank is ready. The tank is doing wonderful, it is a 120gal 48x24x26 ( I believe) I use 2 150 mh bulbs 10k, and the 2 actinic lights. This tank has been up for 6 months.

i think a clam would be fine to add to your tank. What kind were you planning on adding? I would suggest something that requires lower light such as a squamosa or derasa, not saying you cant keep a maxima or crocea. I just think with 150's you will have better success with a lower light clam in a deep tank.

Thanks Matt, thats kinda what I was thinking too. I need more color in my tank. The xenia is tanish color and is all over, so it is making my tank look almost colorless. I wonder if a colorful carpet anemonie would look good. Do you think it would start stinging and or killig the xenia though?

I would never even consider another carpet anenome. Mine was a fish eating machine. It was such a sloppy eater that it was bad for water quality.

Some people like them, and they are pretty, but I advise against them.

Look for green or gold leathers to add a touch of color. That clam would be a nice addition too. I am partial to the patterns of squamosas.

I agree with essop on this, Carpets are not an easy creature to care for, plus they get HUGE and dangerous. Nothing compares to a giant sarcophyton IMO and they can be fragged if they get to big. I have an ORA green polyp Sarco that has grown over 6 inches wide in the past 6 months, thats just scary fast. As for your clam, if you do decide on say a maxima or crocea be sure you place them in an adequate position in the tank. My little maxima did just fine until my tang decided it was her favorite toy, and my crocea is getting HUGE! It's about halfway up in the tank and is a happy clam, it's bigger than the crocea in the display at the shop now, thats what a steady suply of calcium does I guess lol.

If you do a clam be sure to stay on top of the Ca and Alk in your system.

Okay Ron. I will come into the shop and see what you have and gets some more heads up on it all.
Thanks everyone,
Nancy

Also I might add this, listen to Matt and Chris when it comes to clams. They both know what they are talking about IMO and have raised some nice specimens.
