clams & 20k's

?

The heck are you talking about bro?? Radiums?

I have all my clams under a 400 watt radium, they are just fine.

20 k's will work. Crocea's and maxima's are usually found in shallower water, seeming more like 65k, and 10 k. Other deep water clams get light more like 20k. What kind of clams are you going to keep?

all that I get my hands on.I'd love to buy seed clams & attemp to grow them out.(Im aware of the shipping mortality)but have'nt set on any species.I have a 1000watt hqi for the 20k radium for my display & may add a 10k Ushio 400 watt.(I want them on the bottom not the rocks)its a 180 gal.
but also just threw together a 10gal with a halide & a 10gal fuge above it .It only has a old 55k 175watt now but since I have several 400watt m-59's I thought I'd put a radium over it for small sps frags & clams.(i guess the higher light species for that tank)since its only 10 mor bucks for the 400 Radium than a 10k 175 ushio.

Eddie, sure it is only 10 more bucks for the radium but what about your electricity bill:spin1: I have a 400w radium on my 15g though. how is your spread with one 1000w radium on a 6' tank?

I'm using the 1000watt 20k coralife on a sunlight supply ballast now.with a hydroponic light mover so the spread is six foot could be more if needed.
I havent started the Radium yet cause the 180 tank is only a few weeks old now and dont see the need to waste it yet.
the coralife 1000watter was from my 135gal oceanic that now resides in the back yard I figure I'll use the coralife 20k till its no good anymore then switch to the"true HQI"ballast from Europe for the Radium that I have.
the sunlight supply 1000 watt ballast I use now will supplemnt a vat outside in the winter that will be connected to the 180 inside by a hole in the floor for the overflow/return.(it will also use a light mover)the 180 is lit at night so this will give me a RDP effect.
I'll use a 65k 1000watt sunmaster cool delux hydroponic bulb for the sunlight ballast then.
I know the electic will be crazy but ya only live once.the 400 over the 10 gal will be just temporay(and only contain racks for frags) so I can start back collecting sps frags while the other systems I'll have mature.
run 12 hours it probably wont cost $15 a month for the 400.but I also have like 9-10 more 400's for my future systems.

My clams were not too happy under a 250W radium with a PFO HQI ballast. They are quite happy with the same ballast and a 65K Iwasaki...

pjr, what clam(s) did you keep? Do you think that a 400w would have been better for 20kk, and maybe equal to the 65k 250w? I'm planning on possibly a Crocea under my 20kk.

Angela.

It's a PFO-HQI 250 W. The Iwasaki has been in there for 9 months, running strong and problem free.

I also wonder if a 400W would have been better. However, it's worth noting that the PAR rating in the Radiums are quite low; other bulbs provide much more output, whether 250W or 400W.

I inserted a used 10K bulb for a month before installing the Iwasaki. It resulted in the clams immediately perking up and expanding fuller.

PJR

currently I have 2 blueline eballasts with 2 400wt xaniums and 4 110 vho actinics. response of clams and corals definately is so-so.
do you think iwasaki's or 10k might be a better bet or will the tank be white maybe with hint of blue with the 65k's?
thanks
andy

I'd go to a pair of 10K for sure. With all the VHO you'll have plenty of actinic to make you and the corals happy.

One BIG note: get a 10K that is on the white side. For example, a Coralife 10K looks and performs like a 20K radium -- very blue and very low PAR. Work with someone like Premium to pick out a 10K bulb that will get some PAR in the tank. I think the Aqualine is one that will work (seems like I recall its temp is actuall in the 8800 range -- that would be fine).

hmm...have to check with paul eric on it.he told me sakis would short out on a HQI.mabey he ment just the 400 watters

There are other (Older style) Iwasaki bulbs that require specific ballasts. The PFO are pretty safe and versatile...

ya I have a dual 400 pfo & a Hydrofarm 430 watt son agro high pressure sodium wich is supposed to be the same as a pfo hqi.

but would'nt try to fire a saki on the Hydrofarm the pfo I have is the standard m-59 setup

Thanks for the reply. I started a poll on the reef discussion forum regarding clams and 20kk lamps if you care to jump over and vote.

thx, angela.
