Clams and High Flow

Hello all

I just bought the Tunze Turbelle TS/24 Stream kit to beef up the flow in my 280 gallon sps dominated reef. I also have 2 Gen-X Mak 4 pumps as my returns. The flow in my tank is very random and strong. I was wondering whether I can keep clams in a tank with this much flow and if so, what types you would recommend. My tank is lit by 3 400 watt radiums on son agro ballasts and 2 VHO actinics.

thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy :)

I have 25 clams (all types) in my 360 and some are in higher flow areas....I figure that as long as their mantles can properly extend then they are fine (altho the preference may be for less flow). I have tried to situate them in the lower flow areas-and there is always one or two areas to be found even in the most turbulent reeftank. I have 6 reeftec pe 1's and 1 PE2 also 2 *1" SS, 2* 3/4" SS and 2 ampmasters on closed loop to give you an idea of flow I am working with.

How is the tank going since you switched to MH? Are you happy with how things look?
Take care,
Janine

I think it would depend on the clam itself. I say if the current is indirect, the clam may be okay. If direct, I'm not sure the clam would fully extend. I guess you'll just have to try and see.

I would opt for bigger clams so they have a better chance at "tackling" the current.
